Things to Do for Students Who Will Be Seniors in High School

Now that school is out for the summer and you have a student that will be a senior in the coming school year, you should be earnestly preparing for graduation from high school by making a check list to discuss with their school counselor. This will allow you and your student to be assured they are on the right path to graduate. Here are some of the things that you should discuss.

Do they have the correct number of credits to graduate and are they in the correct subject field-fine arts, technology, etc. If they have somehow missed a credit they should have taken doing their freshman year, they can take it now.

Have they successfully passed the state mandated test? If they have not, have them take it during the summer so that will be one less worry for them and you.

Check their schedule for their senior year. They may only need to take one or two classes to be on tract to graduate. If this is the case, they may be able to take dual enrollment courses so that they can get credit for high school and college at the same time. If they want to work, then you need to make sure they are in the work programs so they can get paid and get credit at the same time.

Sign them up to take the college entrance exams, both the SAT and the ACT. Most colleges take either or.

Discuss the next step with your student whether it be college, technical school, military, work or whatever. The more you talk with them, the more they will think about their future.

These are only a few of the things you should discuss with your student who will be a senior in high school. The senior year can sometimes make or break a student. It is a time when they think they have arrived; it is up to you as a parent to let them know they have only just begun.
