The following are "pros" to practicing fruitarianism. Please keep in mind that for each "pro," there is a con.
Fruit is one of the best tasting raw foods there are, and of course this diet would appeal to those who enjoy sweets or sugars.
Fruitarianism is very cleansing to the body, and can (short-term) be helpful in preventing diseases which are caused by toxins in the body.
Fruitarianism helps with weight-loss and can make you feel lighter, more energetic, and can help with clearing skin blemishes. (acne, etc)
Fruitarianism can reduce the amount of water that you must drink to stay hydrated. (This is good news for those who hate drinking water!) Fruit is high in water content.
Fruit if it isn't refrigerated, shipped, treated with pesticides and is grown locally, is a low violence food.
Fruitarianism can help your respiratory system to work better than on cooked diets, and even slightly better than it would on other raw food diets.
Now, all of the pros being stated, but by no means are those all of the pros to fruitarianism- here are the cons. (Keeping in mind that these are not the only cons either!)
Fruitarianism can cause severe and rapid weight loss, and it can be almost impossible to gain weight on an all fruit diet.
Fruit is expensive, and modern growing practices cause it to be of a lesser quality. The best way to buy fruit is to buy organically grown, local fruit. This can make it very difficult to follow the principles of fruitarianism.
It can be extremely difficult to follow the principles of fruitarianism because a fruit diet is lacking in satiety, hunger is almost constant, and a fruit diet isn't very satisfying.
It's extremely easy to over-eat, or "binge" following an all-fruit diet. The sugar in fruit can cause a sugar addiction, which is known for causing food cravings, binges and over-eating in general.
Fruitarianism is a detoxifying diet- physically. But extreme, or constant, physical "detox" can cause mental or emotional issues- feelings of deprivation, isolation, etc. This in turn can cause binging, over-eating, etc.
If you decide to try fruitarianism, make sure to discuss it with your physician. It also wouldn't hurt to discuss the diet with a licensed dietitian. It's important to make sure you don't feel deprived or isolated while doing any type of diet, and it's vital to make sure you don't end up with vitamin or mineral deficiencies.
If you choose to give fruitarianism a try, make sure you are doing it because you truly think it would be beneficial to you and your health.
