Things to Do When Visiting Someone in the Hospital

Few people like hospitals. The reality is they rarely are the source of pleasant experiences. Despite this truth, almost everyone will find themselves visiting someone they love or care about in a hospital during their lifetime. Your actions during such a time are very important. Your behavior could either lift the spirits of the person you are visiting or make their situation even worse. While this list will only be a start, here is a list of things you SHOULD, when visiting someone you care about in the hospital.

Be strong. When visiting someone in the hospital try to hide your own emotions as much as possible. A person who is sick or hurt, doesn't want to worry about family members who are sad or depressed. Before entering the room, make sure you are composed, and try to hold back your tears or frustration until after you are out of the room. You will help the person who is a patient in the hospital to stay in good spirits.

Engage in good conversation. A person in a hospital has spent hours alone just laying in a bed. This gives them lots of time to worry about any and everything that is wrong in their life. When they have a visitor come in, they are ready to talk. Try as much as possible to engage in good conversation with your loved one. Talk things that are positive and happy. This could be anything from sports to movies to family. This will depend largely on the person you are visiting. It also never hurts to crack a good joke. Laughing is a great healer, and can really help someone in the hospital.

Take care of any needs. There are often things that your family member may want or need that the hospital cannot provide for them. Maybe their is a magazine or book that they would really like to read. Maybe they have a hobby that they could work on while in the hospital. If you can bring these things for the hospital you are helping out tremendously. Again they will help to but their mind on something less stressful.

Bring flowers. Bringing flowers to the hospital is always a great idea. They let others know that they are loved and cared about. Maybe their is something other than flowers your family member might want. Surprise them by showing up with it. You just might make that person's day!

Be unselfish. Don't allow your own troubles or difficulties to turn you into a bad guest. Keep your focus on the person you are visiting. This could be simple things like hunger, being tired or uncomfortable in the hospital. Don't let others know that you are frustrated, instead keep the focus on the person in the hospital.

Be encouraging. One of the best things you can do for someone you are visiting in the hospital is to be encouraging. Let them know you think they will be alright. Let them know that they are in your prayers. If you know of someone who has experienced the same illness or injury, share their story of overcoming this challenge. Whatever you say that is encouraging will help your family member to recover and feel good again.
