Things to Watch Out for at Auction Sites

Timothy Scheiman
Hundreds of people everyday buy and sell on auction sites on the Internet. Ebay is of course the most well known. However, there are other auction sites that stick to certain types of items. No matter which sites you frequent there are some things you need to know.

High buy outs

One problem I see frequently on some auction sites is some people would want to out right purchase the item but the buyout is set too high more than the item is worth. The seller wants to get the best price that he can get for an item so he will deliberately set the buy option too high hoping that someone will purchase it for that price. This forces you to either buy it at that price or to bid. Once bidding starts some items in, high demand, start a bidding war. You end up frustrated or buying the item from someplace else. You originally went to the auction site to save a buck and you end up going somewhere else or ending up paying more than you wanted.

Low starting bids with high reserves

This tactic gives you no place from which to gage what price the seller is willing to let the price go for. It would be nice for opening bids to start at the littlest amount the seller will take for the item. The seller puts in a low starting bid to get more people bidding. A lot of times this will have the reverse affect were many will not bid at all.

Shill bidding

This is the practice of the seller creating extra accounts to bid and drive the price up. This kind of practice is frowned upon and in some auction sites the seller is banned if caught. Ebay does forbid its members from doing this kind of practice, but it seems they do it anyway. However, Ubid also discourages this kind of behavior and if caught the seller is banned and no longer able to sell its goods at their site anymore. Computers and electronics are very popular items and normally the bidding is very competitive. When shill bidding is allowed it knocks the average user out of the competition to purchase electronic items. If you are bidding on an item and you detect that this is happening no longer bid on it cause you can't win it without spending more than you should have to.

Limited item disclosure

Unfortunately not everyone is truthful in trying to sell items. Make sure you read the fine print and know exactly what you are getting. Some sellers will show you a box and thats all they are selling. Make sure you know what you are buying. Don't bid on items your not planning on purchasing.

Feedback can be biased

If the sellers item arrives late because of the shipping carrier or another problem beyond his control he can receive a bad feedback rating. The same holds true for the buyer if delays payment for a day or two. Make sure you understand the auction sites rules. The seller will also have conditions for the sale to take place. Make sure you know what those are before you bid.

Some auction sites are better than others depending on the line of products your looking for. Before you bid just familiar yourself with the site and its practices so your properly informed.
