Whatever you do in New York for your vacation this year it will be a unique experience. Make use of the parks. They are great places to just take a rest while walking around. Just have a good time and New Yorkers will be glad to point you in the right direction, no matter what you have heard about them being standoffish.
The first thing is something you cannot do this year and probably next year also and that is to go to an amusement park in the City of New York. The last one, Astroland, in Coney Island Brooklyn has been sold and will be torn down to make may for a newer more modern amusement park. It will be a big blow to the businesses in Coney Island that depended on Astroland to bring in the visitors, but you can still come to Coney Island and have lunch at the original Nathan's Restaurant, which has been dispensing hot dogs from the same location since the beginning of the twentieth century. There is something about having a hot dog here that makes it taste different. Maybe it is the salt air from the ocean, but whatever it is, they taste the best. Of course, when you come to Coney Island there is always the beach. And do not forget the Aquarium. The kids will love it, and so will you. They have special events going on all year long and try to be here for feeding time. It is a riot. Coney Island is easy to reach from Manhattan, just take the F train all the way to the end and you will be right there.
There is one other thing you cannot do when you come to New York for your vacation this year and that is visit the Intrepid Air Sea and Space Museum. The ship is in New Jersey getting an overhaul, but will be back better than ever, just not this year.
Make some time to come to Queens and see a Mets game at Shea Stadium. Just be sure to get your tickets as early as possible. They are at a premium this year and if the Mets start off with a winning record, they will be even harder to get. Do not even think of driving to Shea for the next few years. A new stadium is being built in part of the parking lot, which was never big enough anyway. It will be that way until the new stadium opens in 2009. Take the opportunity to come to Shea one last time. There is not much time left. Its ok if you root for the opposition, the Mets fans will not get on your case- much. Catch the #7 train at Grand Central Station and get off at the Shea Stadium stop.
