Think Twice Before Buying a Reptile

Reptiles Aren't the Most Tame Creatures

Daniel Shin
Let's face it, reptiles aren't the most adorable or cutest living organisms on the face of the earth, but they do however attract a lot of attention. It also isn't one of the easiest tasks to become or try to be a reptile owner for the first time. Majority of the "want to be owners" initially look for the least expensive reptile to see if everything will work out first. First impressions are lasting and a bad experience at this point can end many budding enthusiasts ardor for the hobby. This article will tell you simply why it isn't the best or smartest thing to buy a reptile.

There are those that love all types of living creatures and then some. It takes more green out of your pocket to provide these critters with a green of their own. Anoles, garter snakes, and dragons might not be a choice if you do happen to run a little low on cash. Most of the animals won't tolerate being handled, in other words, touched. It is sometimes often wise to stick with the most common pets we generally know as a dog, cat, fish, or bird.

Here are six reasons why NOT to buy an amphibious creature:

1. Temperament- Many reptiles at an early age may be small and look all cute pouncing and jumping around in the cage. Others just sit there staring off into space. Most of the reptiles get stress when humans are handling them and can often get a little aggravated. You can be left with cut and marks just for trying to pet the creature.

2. Money- Supplies and food are needed to keep a healthy reptile alive, especially those that need a humid habitat with different temperatures during the day and night. It takes a little bit more money to take care of a reptile than it would a dog or cat.

3. Time- Many critters require a lot of attention on a daily basis as in changing the food, buying live insects for them to feed on and constant observation.

4. Longevity- Reptiles can live for quite a while and the longer they live the more it's going to take your money and time.

5. Habitat- This is a tricky one. If you just have a baby or hatchling of a reptile it is almost guaranteed you will have to buy a bigger enclosure. You must make sure that the temperatures are near perfect, proper humidity is given, and cleaning of the enclosure.

6. Health- Many reptiles can be handled but also carry the bacteria salmonella which can cause humans to become ill if proper procedure are not taken. You must wash your hands all the time and make sure they are far away from anything you eat or drink.

In closing, do you still think you can own a reptile? Will you live up to its standards? These are the questions you need to ask yourself before going in to purchase your new cold-blooded friend.
