Think You Won't One of Those People that Goes Missing? - Think Again

A Good Deed Deserves a Smile and a Thank You. Are You Absolutely Sure?

ArraiEl
A young woman is on the way to a baby shower for a childhood friend but realizes she is very low on gas and won't make it. Reluctantly, she pulls into a gas station determined to get in, get out and back on the road ASAP.

She uses cash to pay the cashier and hurries back to her car, gets in and starts the engine. Then a knock on her window.

A man, dressed in a nice suit and smiling is holding up a $20.00 bill indicating it was hers. She wonders where did he come from then he knocks again, insisting she roll down the window.

What would you do? This was a very clever and insidious ruse that was used on someone who happened to realize, in time, the money couldn't possibly be hers. She indicated "No" to the man who instead of smiling and 'pocketing the money' became belligerent and violent, screaming and banging her window! Kicking her car! Horrified, she quickly started the car and drove off glad she had the presence of mine to lock her doors automatically when first re-entering her car. (A lot of cars auto lock only after the car has been put in "Drive" and hit certain speeds leaving the driver and the occupants vulnerable to car jacking or worse! Always lock all your doors automatically when you first get in and make it a habit.)

Only later did she realize it was a ruse all 'staged' to get her to let down her 'guard' and roll down her window. The place was all but deserted except for her, the man and a cashier who was behind a steel cage and out of sight. If the money was not hers why did the man behave that way? And she could swear she never saw where he came from. What might have happened if she had complied? Only Gods knows but law enforcement agencies want to warn everyone - kidnappers, child molesters (imagine this happening to a child - much more of a sure lure then candy!) serial killers are thinking up more smarter and insidious ways to get you (or a child) to 'drop' your defenses in the name of a good deed and cash money.

The many thousands of missing may have been victim to such 'ruses' designed to work very effectively no matter how wary or alert the person might be. Unfortunately, in many cases, we may never know.

  • Good samaritan or devious kidnapper?
  • Candy is dandy! Liquor is quicker but Money is Honey designed to sweeten the trap!
Most people who have NOT dropped the offered money will say "Yes, that's mine." Especially children. What would your kids do?
