Think You're Not a Minivan Mom? Meet Nissan Quest

Let's be honest, few in the Boomer crowd and almost no one in the first wave of Generation X is quite ready to admit they can love a minivan. Aren't those the cars that ushered in the reviled phrase "soccer mom?" But we're here to tell you that it may be time to forget the phrase, and embrace the mini. And the Nissan Quest, with an MSRP of $25,080 - $34,780, may be just the car to convince you.

True, with gas costing what it does it's hard to get gleeful about a big vehicle, but if you have lots of people to tote, you know you'll be buying for space. And Quest pulls a relatively respectable 23 MPGs or so on the highway.

Drive

From the minute you see its sleek-albeit large-body, you'll understand why this model's predecessors have been top sellers for years. Get behind the wheel and the appeal deepens. The V6 engine is perky enough to keep you sailing over hills while keeping pace with heavy traffic. Reviewers at "Automobile Magazine" who drove the car through a host of conditions said that its power and handling match all driving conditions. That's important considering that the Quest has the space to haul seven passengers and plenty of cargo.

Safety

All the safety stuff you want-a high-intensity cabin that protects those inside; front-seat active head restraints; high-strength steel side-door guard frames; and anti-lock breaks-are all there.

Gear

Now the fun stuff-there are all kinds of gadgets and fun accessories packed inside that you and the kids will love, including:

  • Rear view monitor: Anytime you're in reverse a camera is activated that shows you what's behind the car. No more crumpled bikes!

  • An entertainment system: This one has flip-down monitors, and separate audio systems for each row. No more bickering about videos.

  • Dual zone automatic temperature control: Let the cool air blast on you while your mother-in-law keeps warm. Flexible seats: Not only can you seat seven but the seats fold down so there's plenty of room for sleeping.

  • The SkyView Roof: Forget standard moon roofs. This one lets each row of passengers choose its view.

  • Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System: This one has a verbal memo pad, too, so you can record and play back notes later.

The Model Years

The Nissan Quest, redesigned in 2007, receives only minor changes for 2009, including: new auto speed-sensing door locks and a new exterior paint color: Tuscan Sun. The 2009 Quest is offered in four well-equipped models - 3.5, 3.5S, 3.5SL and 3.5SE. It goes on sale in September. With so few changes, bargain-hunting minivan mamas will realize the sense in snapping up your own '08 now. Ask about a discount on the 2008 models, but don't be put off if the dealer is initially resistant. Less production and high demand means even older model Quests are difficult to find. But press on!
