Thinking of an Effective and Creative Domain Name for Your Business

Whether you're a small business or large corporation, your presence on the Web is becoming increasingly important. Though it's critical you invest in a paid placement program with a wide variety of metatags to support efforts on different search engines, your domain name is perhaps the most important element in targeting your consumer. The domain name serves as the front door to your website and it needs to be something that your prospective consumer can identify with.

If you haven't selected a domain name yet, then you'll find it's increasingly difficult to find one you like that hasn't already been taken. As the World Wide Web gained popularity, people invested in buying up large sums of domain names knowing that particular companies will want to use that name down the road. If you're finding that your domain name is unavailable, then there are solutions. First of all, if you have the money then you can simply buy the domain from the current owner. They'll be looking to cash in on the deal. One recommendation I'd like to make is if you're a large company looking to protect trademarks then register for many possible combinations of the trademark in case of future complications.

With that aside, how do you select an appropriate domain name? Choosing a domain name can actually be quite a fun process. When I was thinking of a creative name for my personal real estate website, my business partner and I had a lot of fun over a few beers trying to think of different, creative names that are sure to standout from the monotonous themes. My advice is to first get together all of the top individuals that are involved with the company. Keep in mind, two heads are always better than one, and if you have multiple opinions then you're more likely to nail down a name that bests suits your company. Start by making a list of some of your favorite possible names. Again, this is a work in progress and you'll have to check on the availability of these names later on.

The number one thing you want to accomplish by choosing the right domain name is for it to be memorable. The simplest and easiest domain names to remember more than likely have already been taken, so you'll need to be a little creative. Try to keep it to just a few words and four letter acronyms. The simpler and shorter the domain name then it will be easier to remember. The human brain can only store so much new information without forgetting it, so a complicated domain name that uses tricky words will not retain well. Do not select a domain name that will be tricky to spell, such as a foreign name or service. Keep in mind that these domain names will be advertised on billboards, postcards, letters, and other advertising medium's so the person seeing it must be able to easily store it within their memory. If you have a domain name that is mysterious then visitors may feel obligated to visit the site just to discover what your company is all about.

The criteria you'll want to use depends on what type of personality you want to convey to your visitors. For instance, it will be much easier to brand a company with a catchy domain name. For instance, one real estate website that always stood out in my mind was MarthaSellsWilmington.com If your company image is that of a fun one, then take the opportunity to create the playful image. I also recommend not using a last name as the website domain name. It's easier to brand common words and phrases than a name.

Another approach to picking a name is to use keywords in the actual domain name. This will maximize results on the search engines and will attract more visitors to your site. For example, if you're in real estate and you specialize in a certain territory then it would be wise to use keywords that are centered around your business, such as LandfallRealEstate.com or SellingHomeinWilmington.com Here's how it works: search engines pick up the metatags on your website when a user types in the information. The results are retrieved and your site tops the list.

Good luck and I wish you much success in your website endeavor.
