Remodeling your bathroom does not have to be as painful as many of us think it will be. Just like there is fashion and trends with clothing and color, the same goes for bathrooms. The home I live in had this bathroom wall paper that was just not my style in terms of color and design. I would just cringe every time I walked into that room. So one day I decided I was going to remodel and make that bathroom mine! I had no idea what I was doing as I never did this before, but I got the courage to just take the plunge and just thought - how bad can it be?
The first thing to do is determine what you want to accomplish. For me it was getting rid of that wallpaper and just making it look updated. The next thing is to decide what color palate you want to work with. For me I like calm colors so I decided to go with almond, white and light blue. Of the color choices, you have to determine what your base color is and what the accent colors are. In my case, almond was the base and the white and blue were accents. I decided to use almond as the base and wanted that on the walls. Blue and white were accents so this gave me a lot to work with.
I went to Home Depot and told the gentleman exactly what I wanted to do. He had me all set from wallpaper remover to the paint. For removing wallpaper, the best thing is to score the paper and apply the gel remover - any brand will do. The gel penetrates the paper due to the scored holes. Be mindful not to score too deep, otherwise you will damage the sheetrock. Let it sit for a few minutes, and using a putty knife the paper will just peel off with the glue. The most important thing here is to remove all the glue with the paper, otherwise it will show in the paint finish. Once you do that you should wash the wall with water and vinegar. This will remove the gel residue. Let the walls dry very well before you decide to sand any spots or fill any dents with wall putty.
Next tape the perimeter of the walls with the blue painter's tape. Take your time with this as this will create nice crisp lines when you are done. Any mess up here will show in the end result. For the wall color, paint comes in so many finishes. I used semi-gloss finish paint because it can be wiped with a damp cloth and some bathrooms get some mildew so I thought this was best. Cut the edges with a small brush or I found the straight edge to work best. It is a small square that can attach to a pole or be used by hand to cut the walls with the paint. Then fill in the walls with the color by using a roller. Apply two coats and dry in between. Once it is dry, you can pull the tape off and the lines will be so nice and straight and clean.
Now comes the fun part, decorating. You have to find shower curtain, bathroom accessories, towel, rugs ect. I liked the selection at Bed Bath Beyond. They have a wide array of colors to pick from. I got a washable cotton rug for near the sink, a white bath mat and for the shower curtain I got a washable kid that is blue. I also got the mildew resistant washable shower liner for extra mildew resistance. They had a nice stainless steel soap dish as well. Don't forget to use your coupons. I saved about $50 with coupons for all of my bathroom accessories.
Now that the bathroom is all updated, I feel like I am going into my get-a-way!
Happy Renovating.
