Of course I am not a straight down the middle Conservative. I am for legalized reefer and most Conservatives are not. Most Conservatives believe in a higher power - I do not. So, should I weaken my only choice of the two political parties for the sake of making some purist statement with my opinions and vote? Noble, yes; supremely foolish too!
George H.W. Bush lost to Clinton in 1992 in great part due to Perot, who bled far more Conservatives and Independents to him then Democrats and Liberals. So if ya proudly voted for Perot cause you were fed up and gonna make a statement, I hope ya like the statement that was made with your ballot. If you were fine with Clinton, then I guess you're fine with it all - I'm happy for ya.
When Glenn Beck gets up there and flaps his gums about how they are all corrupt, fine! Maybe they are. But lemme ask ya this: If 10% of Conservatives and Independents were to vote a third party, what would be the result? Democrats winning the election. Does that sound like a good idea to anyone, sans the Progressives?
Yes, Republicans have lost their way for sure and for certain. But, it is far easier to weed out the RINO's from the Republican Party then it is to invent a new party made up of disaffected Conservatives, Libertarians and Independents. Such an amalgam - a third party - would take a couple generations to coalesce into a power that could win any major national election. Yeah, Republican's are not pure and perfect, but the third party talk is foolish.
Believe me folks, Progressives love the idea of a splinter amongst the various ideologies that vote Republican. They rub their hands together in gleeful anticipation. And you can bet they would be out there encouraging this event to manifest.
For the record, Glenn Beck isgenuine in his stating he hates both parties - I have been listening to his radio program since well before the 2004 election. Part of his histrionics are to "prove I am not a shill for Republicans." Well I am not a shill for them either, but I do vote for them because common sense demands it. Again, yes, in a purely noble exercise of my right I could vote for a third party offering, but that will only elect Democrats folks. I'm a lot of things, but naive "statement maker" I am not!
I care not for RINO's but I understand the parameters within which I must work to see my ideology to the fore. I know NOTHING is pure as the driven snow. I know that despite the corruption of SOME Republicans, Democrats are as corrupt if not more so, and to vote for a "purist" candidate will only hurt my future hopes. Did electing Obama work out?
I know that to see my ideology move to prominence I must operate within the framework of the system, or stand alone in the political and policy making wilderness for 50 years. So as much as I would love purist ideological action, I know better then to cut off my nose to spite my face.
If Conservatives want to see their ideology become more politically attractive it is a simple task to make that so. VOTE OUT THE RINO's! It's the cheapest, easiest, most doable, most effective and most immediate of all the possible actions we could ever consider. Vote out the RINO's in the primaries.
When the powers that be see that Republicans and those that vote with them will out of hand reject "Republican Lite," the Party will stop putting them up for consideration. Reagan was right - run real Conservatives and they win every election. No, not religious Conservatives, not rabid anti-abortion Conservatives, but mainstream Conservatives.
Small government Conservatives. Strong military Conservatives. Yes, SOME social values, but more preserving our heritage and traditions. Strong Constitutional constructionists. I would bet my life and my fortune that if those were the people the Party pushed forward for us to vote upon, we would win election after election.
We the people have the power to make the Republican Party do what we want. Send 'em a letter and tell them when they forward traditional Conservative principles and candidates, we will contribute to them. If not, no money from us.
Believe me folks. Despite the claims of Progressives, Republicans are not nearly so ideological as the Left makes out, and as ideological the Left in fact is. Recall 8 years claiming Bush was the most Conservative thing since Christ Himself, but the reality is, in terms of spending and social welfare Bush was nearly as Liberal in those areas as was Bill Clinton.
Believe me folks, the Progressives are not discussing splintering off in a purist mode. They have the power and will do all they can to hold it. If we demand the Republican's run Conservatives, we will unseat these clowns in damned short order.
No matter how much one might have disliked Bush, he was not an America hater. He did not apologize to the world for America. Like him or not, he did not hate capitalism. He did not hate the traditions of this nation.
Can anyone minus a Progressive make the same claim about Obama and his minions? Think about that for a minute. I think the answer is glaringly clear, no? No matter how much one wishes Bush had done "X" better, only a Progressive would ever try to claim the US is better off now and headed in a better direction now under His Most Messianic Self. Clearly polling tells us the nation is much worse off now under the Obama tutelage then it was under Bush. All these majorities cannot be wrong, no matter how much Progressives scream it.

Post a CommentMike, I have to disagree with you if you don't think that Ron Paul's dogged Ayn Rand type views on economics aren't attractive to big money donors you are incorrect on this one bro. Nice write up Jim, although Reagan supported a gun control bill, raised taxes and promoted amnesty. I think that your point still stands.
I have to be honest. The one good thing about third parties, is when there is no good Democratic or Republican choice, I can vote for them, instead of staying home and not voting. All votes count. The bad part about third parties is most likeley they will never win, and there are some crude parties out there like the Nazi Party.
You make some legitimate points. I'd rather just throw them all out of office and start over again. I'm not sure any of them can be trusted unfortunately. They have forgotten they work for us and I'm sick of their bullying tactics to shut up Americans who don't agree with what they are doing. I'm not a member of either major party for that reason. I vote my heart, even when it proves to lead me astray from time to time. What I hate is that candidates lie about their intentions. It makes it difficult to know who to vote for.
I don't know why you get so upset over what the Progressives, a minority in the democratic party, do. Anyone who thinks two parties truly represent the American public is deluded. We are the only country in the world who only has two major parties. And a 2-party system is much more prone to corruption because the lobbyists only have to concentrate on two parties. They're all bought and paid for.
You make great points Jim. Third party candidates (as attractive as the idea is at times) are doomed from the beginning. At least for now, it's a choice between the lesser of two evils - which like you said, is an obvious choice. :)
I plan on voting for the best candidate. I don't care what their political affiliation is, their sex, their race, or anything superficial, as long as they stand for what I believe in.
Totally agree, way to go!
I go with Mike on this. Great article, Jimbo!
Agree 100% with you, Jimbo and also with Mike!
*except for a scant few such as Jimmy Duncan and Ron Paul - I meant these are the few Republicans NOT bought and paid for by global big money interests (oops!).
