An Interview with a Comics Artist

Donald Pennington
Johnny Hall
Date of Interview: 03/25/2009
Well whaddya know dear readers? This interview series has found us all an interesting source who's not only someone who'll quote Abraham Lincoln (Whatever you are be a good one) and Winston Churchill: (Success is going from failure to failure without the loss of enthusiasm), but he'll throw some poetry in the mix along with a cartoon series. Ladies and gentlemen, meet AC's poet/comic strip artist/all around great guy...Johnny Hall:

Interview Question Number One: Please share with us a little bit about yourself:

JH: My name is Johnny Hall and I have wanted to see action figures of my comic book creation, "THIS GUY", since 1997. I would love to see children playing with my characters. I still love toys as well. I am married to my high school sweetheart and I have four children. I now serve in the U.S. Army.

Interview Question Number Two: What personality type would you say you are?:

JH: My personality would depend on the situation. I can say this or that, but would it really be true? I guess I'm just an average John. :-)

Interview Question Number Three: How long have you been writing?

JH: I really don't write. I draw cartoons.

Interview Question Number Four: Which genre do you prefer to work in?

JH: I would love to create a cartoon that would find syndication and go on forever. Kinda like Mr. Charles Schultz.

Interview Question Number Five: Tell us some of your best AC titles please.

JH: I think Route Step would be one. I know that anyone who has been in the Army can relate to those. I really love my poem, "The Little Paper Boat". I am also very fond of my comic book entitled, "THIS Guy".

Interview Question Number Six: What is your biggest source of inspiration in your writing and why?

JH: I would say my childhood is my best inspiration. I had a very good childhood. The good definitely outweighed the bad.

Interview Question Number Seven: What made you choose AC?

JH: I chose AC by accident or fate. I really don't know which but I'm glad to be part of it.

Interview Question Number Eight: If you could improve AC in any one way; what would it be?

JH: I'm really not an expert in improving anything. I guess nothing at this point. I'm still trying to improve myself. :-)

Interview Question Number Nine: Now these next few questions are in hopes of getting to know a little more about you; what do you like to read?

JH: I love to read classic books by: Twain, Poe, Verne, Stevenson, Dickens, Wells, and comic books. It depends on the comic book. I'm picky and it's been a while. I greatly love to read The Bible. It is my favorite book ever.

Interview Question Number Ten: Please tell us who is one (or more) of your personal heroes and why.

JH: Paul the Apostle would be in the top ten. I love the passion he had for his beliefs and what he endured to carry them out. I am also very fond of Mr. Jared Martin who played Dr. Harrison Blackwood on War of the Worlds The Series. He was just cool. I actually made contact with him and I received an autographed picture. Oh yeah, I can't forget Fritz The Nite Owl, The late night horror show host in central Ohio back in the 70's and 80's. He was way ahead of his time. Very down to Earth.

Interview Question Number Eleven: If you could really truly get just ONE thing that you wish for; what would it be?

JH: That's a hard one. I'm thinking to really please God like David of the O.T. did.

Interview Question Number Twelve: What was/is your favorite subject in school?

JH: My favorite was always History.

Interview Question Number Thirteen: What has been one of your greatest public tragedies?

JH: I was in junior high school and as earlier I said that I love toys. I had gained several action figures and had them in my pockets. I was changing out in P.E. and I went to fold my pants and al of those action figures spilled out in front of all the guys. I always tried to front and act cool but that day blew it. It was an icy-hot cold humiliating feeling that my toy fetish had been discovered.

Interview Question Number Fourteen: What have you done in life that you're the proudest of?

JH: I designed a battalion coin in South Korea when I was stationed there back in 1998. I received the first minted copy of that coin. My wife carries it with her to this day.

Interview Question Number Fifteen: What would you call the 'dream vacation?'

JH: I think a vacation, period, would be nice. :-)

Interview Question Number Sixteen: Please share with us a story about your favorite pet.

JH: I don't have any.

Interview Question Number Seventeen: What kind of movies and/or television do you enjoy watching?

JH: I enjoy watching baseball. I will look for older movies I watched while growing up. When I get the chance to watch T.V.

Interview Question Number Eighteen: First word to pop into your mind please; what do you think of when I say: 'power?' Be honest.

JH: I think of Power 108 on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It is now Kicker 108. Power 108 use to have a "phrase that pays" and paid $108.00. When the radio station made a call to someone They would say, "power 108 can you tell me the phrase that pays"? The response, "Power 108 with over 50 minutes of music every hour guaranteed"! We use to get a lot of people back before caller I.D.

Interview Question Number Nineteen: What do you want your Legacy to be?

JH: I hope that my children, wife, family and friends remember me as fair and doing what I think is right.

Interview Question Number Twenty: Is there anything else you'd like to add?

JH: I think that covers it all. Thank you and I have actually enjoyed this.

DP: Well I've enjoyed it too Johnny. Those comics of yours are just great! Dear readers, if you're gonna be looking for more from Johnny Hall just go here. If you're looking for a little more exposure, for free, to some of the best readers you could ever hope to meet, just go here.
