The Unsettling Secret of Happiness

Clarke Waldron
There is not one of us humans who does not seek to be happy. From what I see and from what I have experienced personally, happiness eludes many of us.

This is not some la-dee-da "feel good" composition, laced with cute little sayings such as, "You can only catch happiness when you stop chasing it," or "Happiness is a warm puppy," or "Stop and smell the roses." As a matter of fact, this tome may make you feel a bit uneasy and may upset some very valued traditional beliefs that many of us hold dear to our hearts.

Having been warned and realizing that other methods of gaining happiness have not worked for you, you may choose to continue reading and be exposed to painful truths that I feel it would best for you to know. You can also choose to look elsewhere for happiness. If you choose not to look here, you will at least always remember that this information is available.

1 - Who are you?

No sugar coating here. You, the person reading this article and experiencing your life is not the real you. How else can you explain when you do something that you know to be wrong? Consciously, logically, you know that some action is wrong. However, you, the physical being, go ahead and do it.

What is the explanation? We have been taught partial truths in regard to this. Those of us who have morals, who have religion, attribute this wrong action to our imperfect nature or, worse, to the evil that is within us.

Let me reassure you that such is not the case. Here is the real truth as proven by science.

The person in control of your life is you. However, this very real person is not the conscious person who is reading this. The very real person who has the ultimate say in what you do, in where you will end up in life is your subconscious self.

In the end, you are responsible for what you do. However, you do not have immediate access or control over this being who you are. This is the normal human condition. Thankfully, only humans have developed this internal situation. Only humans know sadness from this condition.

For what is happiness? Here is the definition that you have never heard: Happiness exists within one's self in the degree to which one's conscious mind is in agreement with one's subconscious mind.

At one extreme, this means that those who are completely psychotic are actually very happy; they have surrendered their conscious being to their subconscious self.

In the same vein, those who are genuinely happy and are examples of great character to us have a subconscious mind that is in agreement with their conscious mind. These are those who are "well-adjusted".

For the majority of us, what is true is that our subconscious mind wants to live in a certain way while our conscious mind (the one that knows what is right) has a different idea.

2 - What is the subconscious mind?

The subconscious mind that we each have is very much different from every one else's subconscious mind. The reason that each subconscious mind is so very different has much to do with what one experiences. No two people experience the same thing.

Another reason is that each person's physical construction (inherited DNA) is unique except for identical twins. In that case, the person's individual experiences are unique. Again, allowing for each person to be unique.

Why is each subconscious mind unique? It is because the subconscious mind operates so very much differently than our conscious mind. We have had glimpses of the incredible workings of the subconscious mind when we consider abnormal psychology.

Directly though, the elements of difference are of critical importance in seeking to understand this being that we each are.

First of all, we think in a linear fashion in our conscious mind. We think of one thing at a time. We may fool ourselves into believing that we can think of two things at once, but we are in reality just switching rapidly between the two.

Simply stated, the subconscious mind can consider many things simultaneously. When we the conscious entities believe that we are doing the same thing, we are only taking apart the process that occurred within our subconscious mind.

Second, our conscious thinking is heavily influenced by the element of time. For the most part, the longer ago a thing happened, the less we remember it. Also, we can logically position events because of the relationship of time to them. We know that we went to school first before we received a driver's license. We know that our parents were much older than us at all times.

To the subconscious mind, time has almost no significance. An event that happened when we were three months old can have just as much significance as an event that occurred three minutes ago. Time is for the most part not important at all.

One of the highest priorities that the subconscious mind considers is the emotional impact of an event. When you do you experience your greatest outpourings of emotion? As a baby. Were you capable of speech at that age? Did you even understand speech at that age?

The result of these facts are that some of the most strongly-felt and highly-regarded events in your subconscious mind, the ones that have the highest priorities are events that you cannot put into words. Herein is a very important reason as to why it is often difficult to answer the questions, "Why do you feel that way?" or "Why did you do that?"

As if this were not enough, another consideration is the astounding ability of your subconscious mind to consider many things all at the same time. Thus, when you are acting according to one emotion, the subconscious naturally brings together many instances of that one emotion. And remember, these instances are not categorized by time; but by depth of emotion.

The subconscious mind is very powerful for two reasons. It is well aware that its comprehension of things is magnitudes above the conscious mind's ability. The second reason is that it is alone. In one moment, it is zero-dimensional. Yet in that same moment, it is one-hundred dimensional. It is zero-dimensional in that the only being that matters, the only being that exists, is you (the subconscious). It is multi-dimensional in that it can easily consider tens, hundreds, even thousands of thoughts at once.

Because of its thought structure, the pure linear logic by which we live in our conscious minds means virtually nothing. Such a thing we have all proven to ourselves many times. We set ourselves a goal. We have every logical reason to reach that goal. And yet, we do not accomplish that goal. The subconscious did not want to reach that goal and all of your rational and logical reasons meant virtually nothing to it.

The subconscious does not communicate with other subconscious minds. It considers the conscious mind as a spectator. The subconscious is all alone. It takes everything in and formulates its own world. It is from this world that great geniuses are born. It is from this world that great atrocities are born. How can a person ever conceive of doing such horrible things that we have seen? It was created in their subconscious mind first. Then at some point, their conscious mind submitted itself unto the subconscious for what ever reason. Then the subconscious mind did what it wanted to do, what it had to do by its own incomprehensible logic.

3 - The subconscious mind is not the enemy.

It is vital to acknowledge that, as you consider your situation, you do not regard your subconscious mind as an enemy. Perhaps I have made the subconscious seem to be almost evil in its nature. However, first and foremost, it is the real you. Second, you must respect it as you would any life form (personally, I would say to respect it as you would any thing that exists). In fact, as you attempt communication with your subconscious mind, you must address it as though it were yourself.

When using the Chevreul pendulum, you would form questions such as, "Am I angry because of my father?" or "When did I begin to feel this way? When I was five?"

Communicating with your subconscious can be very difficult, even complicated. This is because the subconscious mind recognizes the conscious mind as not much more than a spectator to the subconscious mind's world. It does not feel compelled to share its truths with a minor entity.

So, to obtain happiness, to obtain an agreement between your conscious and subconscious minds, you must operate with complete respect for the subconscious, and reach a communal point. This is coming to peace with yourself.

It is no wonder that the peoples of the Far East seem to have a better spiritual life than we of the Western World. They actively seek to achieve this communing with their subconscious mind. Meanwhile, in our Western World, we are often too action-oriented. To sit still and do that which is necessary to accomplish communion with one's subconscious does not look as though you are getting anything done.

By using the term "spiritual life", I refer to one's inner life, the relationship between one's conscious and subconscious mind.

What is the one characteristic of those who are at one with themselves? When you consider those who have mastered any form of martial art (from Karate to Tai Chi), what is the one characteristic that makes them stand out?

They are calm.

No matter what happens, they are calm. Would not happiness be reflected in how calm one is? Being calm is not highly revered in our Western Society; that is not action. That doesn't accomplish anything. How much money can you make? How fast can you go? How much power over people do you have?

So at the same time, by not revering calmness as a great attribute, we of the Western World must be saying that happiness is something else. It is money or power over others or something else that we do with action.

We are wrong. I have already stated what happiness is: It is when our conscious mind and our subconscious mind are in agreement; that when our two beings that are so very different are at one.

4 - How do I accomplish this oneness?

There are many different methods. We are all so very different when comparing our subconscious selves one to the other. On the other hand, all of our conscious minds are somewhat similar.

There is one alleged method which you must ignore immediately and permanently: subliminal programming. For years, I bought into the idea. For years, I tried it. It never worked for me. So, one day I googled for "scientific proof of subliminal programming". Imagine my surprise as an absolute polarity developed as I visited the different sites.

The polarity was this: either I encountered sites that stated that there was no scientific evidence for the effectiveness of subliminal programming or I encountered sites that supported the efficacy of subliminal programming. The key element was this: all the scientific evidence presented disproved subliminal programming. There was never a documented, scientifically-sound experiment that supported subliminal programming. All that was ever said in favor of subliminal programming was that at best, it had a temporary and minor effect on a subject.

I felt so betrayed; for decades I had championed subliminal programming as a valid method of improving oneself EVEN THOUGH IT NEVER WORKED FOR ME! And then I find that it all was a lie. (To convince me otherwise, just present a valid scientific study that verifies that subliminal programming works.)

Having said that, I move immediately to the one method that has worked for me and which is verified by over a hundred years of scientific inquiry. Let me further explain that when I utilized this method, I had every doubt that it would not work. And yet, it worked effortlessly and effectively as if I had taken my very first dose of anti-depressant medication.

The method is hypnotism; specifically, as any qualified hypnotherapist will tell you, self-hypnosis. This is the saying: all hypnosis is self-hypnosis.

I went to a qualified, experienced hypnotherapist who was a woman. Her methods were text-book ideal. I would know; I had spent years studying hypnotism from several different sources.

I have had various kinds of spiritual experiences and done all kinds of imagination exercises. I have had experienced many deep emotions.

I was therefore genuinely disappointed with my hypnosis session. It was nice and relaxing but it wasn't anything really tremendous. I remember having my own conscious line of thought, of doubt while I was "deep in hypnosis". I thought, "What? Is this it? This is nothing. She is just talking to me. What utter rubbish!"

The session ended. I thanked her and left. Nothing seemed different. Some thirty-six hours later, I had the experience that I described earlier. The feeling lasted for about two days.

I was due to return to the hypnotherapist to see her one more time so that she could make a self-hypnosis tape for me that I could use by myself; I wouldn't really need her help any more once I had my personalized tape.

I didn't go back. The reason: I couldn't come up with the money for the one last session. Yet somehow, I came up with the money for the first session. What happened? My subconscious did not feel threatened until I experienced hypnosis. Once it realized that the conscious mind could have some degree of control over it, the subconscious made sure that I couldn't come up with another clump of money to go back.

This is why I urge anyone seeking reconciliation with their subconscious mind to do so peacefully, with the true intent of allowing the subconscious its choices while allowing the wishes of the conscious mind. This is what I am just now exploring. This is why I tell you that you must not have the mentality that you are going to conquer your subconscious.

You cannot conquer your subconscious for two reasons: One - The subconscious mind is many magnitudes more powerful than your conscious mind; you cannot overpower it. Two - It just isn't done that way. You must love yourself into it. Your subconscious is who you really are. It exists. It is you. You must love your subconscious self without reservation or judgment. In being capable of loving another, you also love your conscious self.

Quite simply, if you do not achieve this oneness within yourself, no external circumstance will make you genuinely happy.

I acknowledge that I have said nothing new to the world. I have just said it in a way that I haven't seen before.

What are other methods?

Meditation seeks to do the same thing as self-hypnosis. Technically, one seeks to slow one's brain waves all the way down to the Delta state while remaining fully conscious.

----- ------- ------ ----

I say these things because I want to help others gain true happiness and to not waste their efforts for decades in methods that are ineffective or detrimental.

----- ----- ----- ----- -----

How much effort do you expend to be the person that you are right now? The answer is: none whatsoever. You do it all automatically, subconsciously, and without conscious effort.

Why is that the truth? It is because what you are, what you do, is under the direct and complete control of your subconscious mind.

And what are you, the conscious one? You are merely just another input for the subconscious mind, just like your eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin (the five senses). Subconsciously all the functions of the body are controlled by the brain.

You do fool yourself into thinking that you have conscious control of your body. However, what you are experiencing is that the subconscious mind accepts your inputs and it directs the body to do a thing.

There are examples that demonstrate that you, the conscious being, is NOT in control of your body (and thereby not in control of all you do, say, and so forth).

One example is learned behavior. When you first walked, you had to exert a lot of conscious effort to do it. Now that you have learned how to walk, you barely expend any thought to it. The same motions and compensating calculations are occurring (they are probably even more involved as you are able to walk very fluidly and combine other activities with walking) but you do not think about it at all.

Another example is when you can't make yourself do something. What logical reason or even unreasonable explanation exists for this phenomenon when you cannot make yourself do something that you know is completely possible, reasonable, and even desirable?

As a example, I will confess one of my own defects: I don't like salads; I would go without food rather than eat a salad.

Now, of course, it is possible for me to eat a salad. It is reasonable that I eat a salad; millions of people do it every day and they enjoy it. It is desirable that I eat a salad; it would be a healthy thing to do. I know that I won't explode or burst into flame from eating a salad. So why won't I eat a salad?

My subconscious mind doesn't want to eat a salad; so it does not ever direct my body to do it. If I try to override that control, the subconscious tries other tactics. It directs the stomach to tighten up or it replays emotions (a series of physical internal actions). It fights me, the conscious being, until it wins; it's a matter of survival.

Why doesn't a person do what they dream of doing? It is because the subconscious mind doesn't want to do that thing. It does as it pleases and you don't expend any effort to do those things which already make you the person that you are. The easiest thing to do is be just who you really are, no matter how defective or imperfect that person is.

Now, this all sounds quite terrible... but the reality is this: to become a completely different person, to do those things which you desire, these deeds can be accomplished with barely any effort whatsoever; it all would come naturally to you - just as you are the person that you are now, you can be that other person just as easily.

I say this in open defiance to all those people who say that you have to struggle hard to make changes in your life, that you must sweat and cry and fight to become that person of your dreams, that it all takes time. For most everybody, this simply is not true. For if it were true, more people would be more successful. Why do I say that? For the fact that most people have spent tremendous efforts to improve their lives and most of them have failed.

What is the truth of the matter? If you are able to change your subconscious mind, it will automatically and effortlessly do what the new you would do... just as it does now to make you the person that you are today (that is, makes you do the things that you do now).

This is no big secret; many before me have come to this understanding. The trouble is that there are many opinions as to the method that the conscious mind can use to change the subconscious mind.

We now turn to science, the same science that gives you computers, the Internet, modern medicine, telephones, airplanes, air conditioning, everything that you now use. These things are all true. They all work.

Does science claim to know a method for the conscious mind to control the subconscious mind? Does science claim that there even is a conscious mind? Does science claim that there is a subconscious mind? Does science acknowledge such non-physical concepts?

The answer is, yes.

This method is so accepted by the scientific community that it is an accepted and recognized procedure in medicine, that one can be certified in its practice as much as a doctor of medicine, a lawyer, etc.

So, what is this method that is so scientifically sound? What is this method that is as valid as laser surgery, rockets into outer space, all the fantastic technology that we see today?

The method is hypnotism, more specifically self-hypnotism.

Burn this into your memory: the vast majority of people who do not employ the practice of self-hypnotism (in some form) will NEVER attain their dreams; they will flounder for their entire life and die unfulfilled.

Please note that I said that this applies to most people. There are some people whose subconscious mind is in good shape and they are the ones who easily achieve greatness. They have no need to change their subconscious by using self-hypnotism.

However, what I have said is true for most people, too many people. It is true for me. I have proven the failure part of this truth time and time again for decades. However, I have proven to myself the truth also.

I have studied hypnotism thoroughly; enough to know how it works, how to do it, and so on. I have experienced a successful session of hypnosis. I experienced the completely effortless change in my life brought on by that session of hypnosis. The completely effortless change came about even though I had completely lost faith in the method of hypnosis because I did not experience what I felt that I should have in the session. So even though consciously I had given up, my subconscious put into motion those new aspects of me that I had desired... and it did it contrary to my conscious thought!

And again, I have proven to myself that the traditional fable of trying hard to change one's life directly is doomed to failure. My latest efforts to become a information research specialist have ceased altogether in complete opposition to every logical line of reasoning that I ever had.

My latest efforts at trying to succeed with my latest and greatest invention have come to nothing again. I find myself in the very same situation that I have found myself in all my life, spanning decades!

And the one and only time that change occurred in my life was by the scientifically-proven method of (self-) hypnotism.

What is the logical conclusion? I need to expend my efforts toward the practice of self-hypnotism until I naturally and effortlessly achieve my dreams. Any other direct method of change will be a waste of time and effort.

This is not to say that self-hypnotism is all that I will do. My subconscious is very willing to let me gather and process information. I can write my essays and contemplate on the nature of the universe. I can enjoy my grandchildren and do many other things.

However, I must not try to directly, consciously, struggle toward my dreams. That is just not the way that it will happen for me. I have proved the opposite to be true far too many times. I have to set aside the logical course of action of pursuing my dreams directly. Everything that I have been taught tells me that direct pursuit is the way to go; what I have been taught is wrong.
