This May Be My Final Post on AC..

Poop Happens

Paul Rance
The Yahoo! involvement, and the fact that I got accepted as a Featured Contributor, means I'll be staying on AC for now. So this article is just how I felt before those changes impacted.

Associated Content's recent decision to stop paying non-Americans performance payments means this may be my final posted piece on AC. I have applied to be a Featured Contributor in several categories, but I'm not taking things for granted that I will be accepted - especially after what I'm going to say here...

I've enjoyed myself on AC in the past 14 months, but I learnt when hundreds of my Geocities webpages disappeared last October, that when you have your work on other people's sites, the rug can be pulled from under you. But, hey, it's not a tragedy. What's happening on the Louisiana Coast and in the Mississippi Delta right now puts things into perspective.

Luckily I have several of my own sites to put my work on, so it's the people who have been really committed to contributing to AC who deserve the sympathy. Some people I know are really emotional and upset by AC's decision, but it's their site, so if they can live with the consequences of their decision so be it.

AC have said non-Americans can keep their work online, and continue to contribute, but unless they are a Featured Contributor then they won't be paid. In other words, AC will still collect money on AdSense clicks from non-Americans, so if we are not Featured Contributors, then we will be, effectively, donating to AC for their hosting our work. Cue the waves of people going to Helium, I suspect.

I think Associated Content has been a force for good, but, when you make changes of this type, it is good PR to announce things quite a way in advance... I'm more angry for other people, especially poets, who won't fit into any of the Featured Contributor categories.

I will continue to promote as many AC contributors I like as I can, but I will not be visiting Associated Content again, apart from answering emails, until my future has been decided here. Thus, the Mickey 'Halitosis' Hodge and Charlie 'Castrato' Collins tribute song to AC contributors may never see the light of day (thankfully, many might say!). See you in a bit, hopefully.

As I was born overseas and now work overseas, I must say that I completely agree with you on this topic. While I'm American, I do not feel American and I wouldn't support AC on this ;-(

Does this include upfront article payment as well? I love writing product reviews and most of my money comes from upfront article payment, that is why I ask. I enjoy reading your work and wish you well! :-)
