This Moment in Time

Genie Walker
All past events in your life led to this moment in your life. Stop, and think about that. This moment right now is the result of all your past actions, reactions and decisions. The present moment is also important in another way because the future rests on what you do now. This is another remarkable thought that should cause you to stop to contemplate and ponder over the implications. Your future depends on what you do, say, don't do or don't say this precise moment in time. You can change the direction of your future by what happens now. This moment in time influences what will happen in your future. Pretty heavy thought isn't it? We actually can control our own future by our actions, inactions or reactions. Is that more power than you thought you had?

Examining your past can be a good idea. Looking backward to see what you did right or wrong in order to judge how to make a better decision for your future can be a great tool. However, be sure not to dwell in the past so long that you become trapped and begin to wallow in past pains. Revisiting those old hurts so you can gather the courage and strength to let them go and move on is different from reexamining the hurts again and again to build up anger, rage or hatred towards someone or something. Then there are others who dwell in the past, reliving their old glorious triumphs because they are not happy in their present situation. This too, is a mistake that a lot of us make. Making a short journey to revisit the past can be good, but stretching out our journey to wallow in past hurts or past glories is harmful to our future.

Looking toward the future, making long range plans for creating your goals on purpose is a wonderful decision. Though as with the past, dwelling in the future has its own traps for the unsuspecting. Making plans for the future without taking steps to truly create that future can be destructive to your soul Think about it, if you continually make future plans that you don't do anything today or tomorrow to establish a foundation for; eventually you will probably think something like "I can't achieve anything. " Making goals and plans without following through is as self destructive as dwelling in the past. I love to make long range plans; in fact I have plans that begin 12 years from now. I'm building the foundation for those plans today; that's the point I'm trying to make. You need to build a strong base today, in this moment, in order for your future plans to have the strength to survive. I am at the moment writing this essay, which is the base for my future plans. I want to write spiritual essays for a living, not a hobby. To strengthen my future plans I am writing essays, poems and articles for AC. The wonderful response I have received from my posts is encouraging me to write more and more.

Together the past and the present can be used to achieve your future plans. I personally am working with my past, present and future to create the world I want. I have notebooks full of thoughts and ideas that have occurred to me over the years (past). I am writing essays based on those notebooks, on my past experiences and on the new thoughts that are sparked by just living (present). I have given a lot thought to what I want to do next to create the ultimate goal I have in mind and I have created a plan with several steps to meet my goals (future). My first step was going public with my writing and to create more and more essays. I will continue to work on step one even when it is time to go to step two: going back to college to get my master's degree in Transpersonal Studies. I'm hoping to start step two in the spring of 2008.

What are your future plans? Are you working today for those plans? You alone hold the power to create the present you desire and deserve. Be your own catalyst to make your today and tomorrow completely yours.

Another great article/essay. I try to live with mindfulness and in the moment - and at the same time, build for the future that I want. Dwelling on the past is pointless, and as you say, can hold us down. Learning lessons from it, and using those as we live and build is a better way to deal with it. Thanks for sharing this - and keep writing!

The importance of today as to your future in your relationships is this:

Even if you say you are sorry - what ever hurtful thing you said will still remain. Moral of the story: you have two ears and one mouth for a reason...listen more than you talk.

There is a old sanskirt saying:
Yesterday is but a dream, tomorrow is only a vision. But today, well lived, makes every yesterday a dream of happiness, and every tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well, therefore, to this day, for it is life, the very life of your life.
    Nice article
