J.J. Bitting Brewing Company is a small brew pub located in central New Jersey in downtown Woodbridge, NJ. Established in 1997, it was the first brewery to operate in Woodbridge Township, New Jersey, since the repeal of prohibition back in 1933. This large and charmingly accommodating three story restaurant is set in a beautifully restored 100 year old brick building that was, in years gone by, the setting of The J.J. Bitting Coal and Feed Depot. The center piece of the restaurant is a triple set of brilliantly shinny copper colored brewing vats placed prominently in the middle of the main floor. The tables and booths are arranged around them. If you bring your little ones; they can watch for the model train that regularly travels around a high ledge in the dining room. The train' s schedule seems to coincide with the full sized train that stops at the train station right above the restaurant. On Friday night the owner enlists live entertainment in the form of a trio of talented musicians who begin to play between 8PM and 9PM. This is a good reason to postpone dinner until late and then stay even later for the music and perhaps another beer.

The burgers served at JJs are beyond any other with in three counties. They will serve them to your specifications, rare if you choose or any degree of cooked all the way to well done, they are always perfect. For the adventurous or the health conscious, there are juicy Bison Burgers also served to your specifications. They do know how to cook Bison, it should be served on the rare side but they will over cook it if you ask them to. As with all their fare, you choose the toppings and condiments from a wide assortment. A great accompaniment to any J.J. burger of course is the fries, cheddar is optional and J.J. makes them in one very long curl. If you prefer they can fry up a great batch of J.J.s sweet potato fries with jalapenos and onions, mmm-emm, they are good.

The beer, made on site and always fresh, is the best. There are seasonal favorites rotated through a lineup of standard favorites, it is always on tap. If you can not decide you might try the sampler which includes all six of their current brews in sample sized glasses. My favorite is their Raspberry Wheat Ale. Everything else on the menu is good but I would avoid the pizza, unless you have an affinity for a standard bar pie, it's really not special at all.

See you at J.J. Bitting Brewing Company for dinner.
