This Song Will Change Your Life..

Natasha Hollerup
A lot of music connoisseurs, and non music connoisseurs, believe that everyone should have a soundtrack of their lives. Zach Braff, the star of the television show "Scrubs" and director of such movies as "Garden State" and "The Last Kiss," created the soundtrack of his life when he did the soundtrack to Garden State. In fact, he received critical acclaim for the album. But before you go and burn a mixed CD of what you think may possibly be the soundtrack of your life, think. If you're in your teens to your 30s, you probably have a lot in front of you. If you are in your teens, chances are that you haven't been exposed to the good stuff. You've probably been exposed to only rap and songs that blond pop stars sing. So to help everyone out with choosing which songs should be in your personal soundtrack, here is a list of songs that I believe everyone should hear and add to the soundtrack of your lives:

-Walking with a Ghost by Tegan and Sara (album: So Jealous)

No matter which way you go. No matter which way you stay. You're out of my mind...

This song can be interpreted in many ways, but I think that it may be a break up song. In the video, Sara Quin, the lead singer of the rock duo, has her heart ripped out. That's pretty self explanatory if this is a break-up song. The lyric "you're out of my mind" could also mean that she's not thinking about the person who ripped her heart out anymore. This is a great break up song, at least to me. This is one of those songs where you go out and have fun to prove that you've moved on instead of sitting at home and moping. However, the term "walking with a ghost" could mean that the ghost of your ex or the ghost of your relationship could still be walking around with you.

-Vultures by John Mayer (album: Continuum)

How did they find me here? What do they want from me? All of these vultures hiding right outside my door...

This bluesy track from John Mayer is most likely about the paparazzi and his celebrity, but this song can also be about toxic people and the negativity that they spread. They're considered vultures, picking away at you until there's nothing left. In this song, John asks, "Whatcha gonna do about it?" He's got a point. It's up to you to do something about it, and this song is one that should be heard.

-No Ordinary Love by Sade (album: Love Deluxe)

I gave you all the love I've got; I gave you all that I could give...

This sexy, sultry song has two meanings. In this song, she talks of a Romeo & Juliet type of romance that ultimately goes sour because she gave too much and he apparently didn't give enough. The song is quite seductive but unfortunately, this is a break-up song. She's trying so hard to keep the relationship from falling apart but in the end, she falls apart and chances are that he leaves her. This is a great song to listen to with a gallon of ice cream and a heavy heart.

-Somewhere a Clock Is Ticking by Snow Patrol (album: Final Straw)

Another soldier says he's not afraid to die. I am scared. I'm so scared...

I don't know the entire meaning of this song, but I'm pretty sure that this song has to do with the wars going on today. Everybody's warring with everybody these days and it's hard not to hear about it. This song is quite pivotal and though it's not a political song, it sums up what our young people are probably feeling over there in Iraq.

-Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush (album: The Hounds of Love)

If I only could, I'd make a deal with God and get him to swap our places...

If the heavy bass doesn't hook you, then there's a problem. I once heard that this song was about a battle of the sexes, but the video made it seem like the song was more about a battle for freedom, individuality. In this video, Kate is dancing in an attic like room and at one point, left behind by her partner and swept into a crowd of people that all look the same. She tries to fight her way out, but she ends up drowning. I think that this song is about freedom and trying not to conform to normality. She sings as if she is trying to get someone not to hurt her for being different and she wishes that she could trade places with this person so they could see what it would be like in each other's shoes. With so much hate and discrimination going on in this world right now, this song is a little perfect to promote peace.

-I Grieve by Peter Gabriel (album: Up)

So hard to move on...still loving what's gone...

This song is also a song that's quite self explanatory. I had to learn that everyone is going to lose someone at least once in their lives. This song goes into how we all grieve, but life goes on. It's slow for the most part, but it's just like Peter Gabriel to shake it up by adding a fast moment to show the joyful chaos of life and how it doesn't just stop when someone you love dies or goes away. Then, the song goes back to being slow and solemn. This is one of the best songs ever.

-Shh by Frou Frou (album: Details)

Don't make a sound. Shh, listen. Keep your head down. We're not safe here...

I've heard that this song was about an alien abduction, but I have two of my own theories about this song. My first theory is that this song is about a couple trying to hide away from the rest of the world so they can get a moment, just a moment of time together. My second theory is that this song is about a battered woman who's trying to run away with her child where no one can find them. Why do I think that? Well, I once used Windows Movie Maker to put the song to the video of Lindsay Lohan's "Confessions of a Broken Heart (Daughter to Father)," and all of the moments of the song where the singer, Imogen Heap, is talking about running went to all of the moments in the video in which the woman is being beaten and Lindsay is trying to stop it all. So, listen to the song and do the experiment to get the feeling that I got.

-Fly by Hilary Duff (album: Hilary Duff)

In a moment, everything can change...

This is great inspirational song. The song is by Hilary Duff, who was once a blonde pop singer, but this song makes the person who's listening to it strive to do whatever he or she wants to do. It's empowering and the music is gripping. It pulls you in and I really like this song. I think that many people will disagree with me on this one, though.

And last but not least...

-Run by Snow Patrol (album: Final Straw)

Light up; light up...as if you have a choice...

This song may seem like the most depressing song ever, but it's actually quite motivational. It's about continuing to go on even though someone you love isn't there anymore. This song is like "I Grieve," but more hopeful. The music makes it sound like the listener has to keep going, no matter what. It's like the listener has to keep running and that the singer is right beside him or her.

There are some honorable mentions by Kate Bush called This Woman's Work and Between a Man and a Woman from her album The Sensual World.

Oh, it's hard for the man. But, his part is over...

This Woman's Work is about giving birth, which everyone probably knows by now. This song went to the movie "She's Having a Baby" and this song applies to every woman in the world who has had a baby or will have one.

With her hand in his hand, they were both happy again. You started taking sides; they started arguing...

Between a Man and a Woman is about a feuding couple. I know that there are a lot of children in this world that either had parents that got into knock down, drag out fights or have parents like that right now. I think that the beginning of the song sums up how they feel about the entire situation.

So, these are the top ten songs that I believe should go on the soundtrack to your life. I know that a few are already on my track list and I hope that everyone takes a listen to at least one of these songs and choose a few for your track list.
