This summer's Birmingham Road construction project

The northernmost portion of Birmingham's downtown area near the Townsend Hotel is about halfway through the first phase of road construction. The project involves widening Martin Street to allow for two-way traffic and installing new sewers under certain sections of road.

The widening of Martin Street will also add 44 angled parking spaces on both sides. The construction currently underway on Martin between Chester and Pierce should be finished in late July. Installing new sewers under Henrietta Street between Brown and Martin will also be finished in late July.

After July, phase two of construction will begin, lasting until October. Phase two will entail installation of new sewers under Bates Street from Brown to Martin and a section of Townsend Street from Chester to Henrietta. The summer-long construction project will also include landscaping improvements in front of City Hall and the Baldwin Library.
