My husband and I are always looking for historical points and places to spend time learning, and enjoying what this world has to offer. Having seen the Bettles Lodge on the show "Ice Road Truckers" we have decided a trip to Bettles, Alaska is what we needed. Bringing us closer to the world we love, and far from the hustle and bustle of the city life we live daily.
History of Bettles Lodge
Bettles is named after Gordon Bettles. Founded in 1898 during the last gold rush in Alaska. Bettles was established as a trading post along the junction of the John River and the Koyukuk River. Miners and supplies were brought up river by steam-paddle boats, and once in Bettles, and then transferred to horse drawn barges for the last 100 miles. The gold rush ended, and the only way into Bettles was now by airplane. This new Bettles was built around the first building in this location, the Bettles Lodge. Built by Noel Wien, of Wien Airlines. The lodge was the first of several built by Wien Lodges around the state of Alaska.
Today at Bettles Lodge
Bettles Lodge is owned and operated by Dan and Lynda Klaes. Dan and Lynda both have their pilot licenses and have opened their own Bettles Air service for travelers to the lodge. Traveling by air is the only way to get to this elegant and beautiful place. Living at Bettles Lodge along with Dan and Lynda are their two children. With 20 years experience Dan and Lynda will help visitors with putting together a holiday package for the visit of a lifetime. Visit them at bettleslodge.com.
Getting Far Away
A visit to Bettles Lodge can incorporate incredible adventures such as the viewing of the Northern Lights or a wilderness journey by dog sled or back packing. Water fun is also exceptional at the Bettles Lodge.
Accommodations
There are three areas at Bettles, the Main Lodge, Aurora Lodge and the Aurora Cabin. Each has something different. The Main Lodge is a quiet spot with a gift shop and restaurant on site. Visitors love the Northern Lights and also snowshoeing while visiting the Main Lodge. Photographers such as hubby and I will love the Aurora Lodge with modern accommodations. The Aurora Cabin is for viewing the Northern Lights from the attached deck. Have a romantic dinner under the stars. There are no indoor bathroom facilities and no indoor cooking facilities at the Aurora Cabin.
Travelers must fly into Anchorage or Fairbanks Alaska and there you will be picked up by Dan or Lynda in order to get to the Bettles Lodge.
What an exciting trip and a chance to take your selves and your families to the great wilderness of this fine country.

Wow, the Aurora Lodge sounds right up our alley! :) Ron wants desperately to go to Alaska. I'd like to see it myself. Perhaps this is something we should start thinking about NOW while we can still walk!
