Thomas Sweet Ice Cream Shop In Princeton, New Jersey

I eat frozen yogurt almost every day, and I often eat a cup of frozen yogurt in place of a meal. Therefore, I have sampled millions of different brands and types of frozen yogurt from grocery stores and freestanding yogurt shops. Although Thomas Sweet is more known for it's "blend-ins" and fudge their fat free Oreo frozen yogurt is hands down the BEST frozen yogurt I have ever had.

Thomas Sweet was formed by two friends named Tom (Tom Grim and Tom Block) originally from Buffalo, NY and started by just selling fudge. They sold fudge at fairs and eventually opened fudge stores in NY and in New Hope, PA. They eventually opened a store in Princeton, NJ in 1979 selling chocolates and confections. Six months later they opened another store in the area and began selling fresh made ice cream. Tom Grim's father found a mechanical contraption in a neighbor's barn from which he got the idea to mix the chocolates and other treat into the ice cream with. Remember, this was prior to the McDonald's McFlurry and Cold Stone Creamery.

They became what are now known as the "blend-in" where you can blend fruit, candy. Cookies, or nuts into the ice cream flavor of your choice and despite recent competition remains Thomas Sweet's claim to fame. Admittedly, I have never sampled their blend-ins and yet despite this I still consider their frozen yogurt to be the best tasting. As far as store sold frozen yogurt I find turkey hill to be the best tasting for low-fat yogurt. While Häagen-Dazs and Ben and Jerrys may be tasty at 5-7 grams of fat per ½ cup that is nearly equivalent to the amount in normal ice cream and far exceeds my standards.

Presently, there are Thomas Sweet stores located not only in Princeton but also in New Brunswick, NJ and Washington, DC. I have visited both their Princeton, NJ and New Hope, PA stores. I did not eat anything in New Hope as the only time I went they only had one flavor of frozen yogurt and it was not soft serve. However, the New Hope store sold lots of interesting nostalgic toys like Gumbi action figures. The store in Princeton is rather small and does not accept credit cards or debit cards, despite this I have never been there when there has no been a line. They are open until 11 or 12 am and even as late as 10:30 pm during the winter I have stood in a line to get some frozen yogurt. They also sell milkshakes, cones, floats, and cups.
