My Grandma is overwhelmed with candles, photo frames, trinkets and snow globes. She has a wall of books. When I am shopping for gifts, I know she needs nothing that will require dusting, or shelf space. In her situation, Christmas Ornaments are great gifts as they are displayed briefly, then packed away. She also loves framed artwork. If I have the time, I will create a picture for her. Gift cards are almost always a wonderful gift. The recipient can choose their perfect gift.
I have adopted an older lady, so to say. Instead of spoiling my sisters children I spoil this nice older lady instead. I know she has a hard time making ends meet, and is on a fixed income. I purchase items such as toilet tissue, soap, deodorant, soups and vegetables. Also canned and fresh fruit and cat food. I include tokens for cab rides, Wal-Mart gift cards and snack foods in a large laundry basket and present it to my adopted Granny. I know it helps her out a lot and it makes me feel good to have made a difference. Senior citizens are struggling with the rising cost of living also, and their income will not increase most likely. Small items like laundry detergent, denture cleaner, and groceries make a great thoughtful gift that will be used definitely!
When I am shopping for my Great Aunt, I know that she reads romance novels and enjoys crossword puzzles. This makes shopping easy, and the gifts are useful to her. She is always pleased with the standard gift of books. It gives her something to anticipate. Which books will she receive this time?
If you know something that the senior is interested in such as gardening, order a gardening magazine for them. If your relative loves fruit, give the gift of a fruit of the month club. If your relative is on a fixed income, pay for a few months of their phone or cable bill. This will be helpful and thoughtful. Gift certificates are always a great gift idea also. Some other ideas of thoughtful and inexpensive gifts include newspaper subscriptions, jelly of the month clubs, photo albums and scrapbooks.

Post a CommentYou're right, it is a bit difficult to give seniors the right gift. I really like your idea about romance novels and basic home necessities like soap and toilet paper. I bet there's a nice way to package toiletries so it looks like a gift. I work for the Meals on Wheels program and I've found that seniors do like gifts that are either warm or cooling depending on the weather.
I've given gifts like the Chillow (http://www.asseenontv.com/prod-pages/chillow.html), the nuddle blanket (www.nuddleblanket.com), and Lava Buns (http://www.shop.com/+-a-lava+buns-st.shtml). Hopefully this will help those of you looking for some useful gift ideas for senior citizens...
