Thoughts on Being a Christmas Eve Baby

J Budd, RN
My name is Jennifer Budd and I am a Christmas Eve baby. When I tell people I was born on December 24, I usually hear one of two responses: "Oh, how special" or "Do you get gypped out of gifts?"

Not many people have a birthday that can illicit such responses. And after 30-plus years of having my birthday associated with mistletoe and holly, I'm used to the novelty of being a Christmas Eve baby. But I must say, it still does put a smile on my face to see people's reactions when I tell them my date of birth.

A Christmas Eve Baby - Little Jenny has a special birthday

The first time I was truly aware that I was a Christmas Eve baby happened around age 6 or 7. I remember my parents throwing a birthday party for me one week before my actual birthday. They wanted to make sure that their little Jennifer didn't get 'gypped' out of a birthday or Christmas gift. That became the norm every year I had a birthday party.

A Christmas Eve Baby - What happened when I grew up?

As I got older, some people did get cheaper. I do recall a few people giving me only one gift and one card for both my birthday and Christmas. It's hard to know how to react when this happens. On one hand, I don't want to seem greedy for an extra gift. However, why am I punished for being a Christmas Eve baby? Do we tell people born February 13th that they get only one present for their birthday and Valentine's Day? Hey, I'm sorry my birthday comes at an inconvenient time for many people, but cut me a break!

A Christmas Eve Baby - I am special!

When I look for Christmas cards, I always try to find a cards that say "For your December birthday" or "For your Christmas Eve birthday." It's a novelty that only a Christmas Eve baby can appreciate. And now that I am older, I rather enjoy having my birthday come during the most wonderful time of the year. I like Christmas items as birthday gifts and Christmas trees on my birthday cards. Sometimes I can't even remember if a gift I got was for my birthday or Christmas. And although my birthday tends to get lost every year in during the Christmas hustle and bustle, I wouldn't change it for anything in the world. I'm a Christmas Eve baby and I'm proud of it!

I am a Christmas Eve baby and I love my birthday! Even though some people might hate the fact that their special day would be overshadowed by Christmas, I love getting gifts two days in a row!

I'm a Christmas Eve baby as well and let me tell you how much I love it. Once Thanksgiving break ends, my countdown begins. I am so grateful for having my birthday on such a wonderful holiday!

Being a Christmas Eve baby yes indeed makes you extra special....and you should have included Madonna's cover of "Santa Baby", by Madonna in a "Betty Boop" voice (though not rock) in your top 10 Rock Christmas songs article as it has a special meaning & connection with you as well....lol

I have known people to give a child's birthday party in July because he was born on Christmas. They always said it was his half-year birthday.

My birthday is in the beginning of December and I used to often get "two gifts" in one. People would hand me one gift saying, "This is for your birthday AND Christmas" -- even though Christmas was about three weeks away... YAY! Great article.

I always wondered how people with this birthday felt. I was born on Thanksgiving and my sister was Easter. We get lots of food and gifts lol.

My mom's birthday is December 23 and I know two people that were born on Christmas day, but none on Christmas. I was born on January 9th so it's cool to meet another Capricorn :)

I had contractions on Christmas Eve one year and hubby begged me to lay down (they went away) but he was born on December 27 and I was in early labor on the 26th for sure. We have found that it is an inconvenient time to have a birthday, but them's the breaks! At least for him, his birthday is after Christmas, but it does seem he gets present overload - Christmas from Santa, 4 sets of grandparents... then birthday from Us and 4 sets of Grandparents... It's a lot for a kid! We buy for both. Sure, it's a lot all at once, but that's just how it has to be.
