Thoughts About the Carrie Prejean Sex Video

I am amazed at the ongoing drama that is Carrie Prejean. Beauty pageants are so anachronistic in our times that usually these young women are merely a blip on the radar screen. If you take any notice of them at all during the pageant, then you'll only see them again later when they show up as a politician's wife or a TV news personality. Carrie Prejean was different. With one politically charged question about homosexuality posed by a buzz-worthy questioner, Perez Hilton, and an honest, yet Bush-esque answer that turned the heads of people who wouldn't normally be paying attention, Carrie Prejean was catapulted into prominence. For simply having an opinion, she now had a platform, a spotlight and a target all at once.

It was then in everybody's best interest to keep Prejean in the spotlight. She got fame and glory by becoming the darling of social conservatives for her stance against gay marriage. She parlayed her new found fame into a gigs with social conservative groups and events. And, of course, Prejean did the usual tour of cable talk shows. She became the target of gay rights activists and liberals in general. Initially, Prejean's opponents looked at the incongruence between her piety and her career as a scantily-clad model and pageant contestant. Then they started prying into her past. They uncovered salacious topless photographs. Then there were allegations that Miss California USA paid for her breast implants. In following months, Carrie Prejean drew attention to herself when she failed to attend to duties required of her as Miss California. Litigation ensued. Donald Trump's involvement ensured that this would remain a story in the headlines of the tabloids and gossip blogs.

Just when you thought that everything with Carrie Prejean was going to die down, it turns out that there's a sex video with Prejean graphically pleasuring herself. People generally suspect that sex tapes are leaked by desperate celebrities who are trying to squeeze a little more out of their 15 minutes of fame. In this case, the information was released by litigants in her lawsuit to deflate her claim for damages against them. However, the bombshell announcement that this beautiful model / political figure/ and social commentator had an erotic video in circulation certainly guarantees that we will be hearing the name of Carrie Prejean for quite some time.

Here's what I think about all of this. Everybody has an opinion. Double standards, hypocrisy, fake piety-it doesn't matter. People will always have an opinion, even if they don't always live up to their own standards. If you ask a controversial question, you're going to get a controversial answer. Millions of people are going to agree, and millions of people are going to disagree. The Carrie Prejean we know now is the product of Perez Hilton's question. That question, given the right circumstances, was enough to create this phenomenon. If he had asked her about her thoughts on world peace or feeding the hungry, we might not now be aware that Carrie Prejean has a sex tape.
