Thoughts on John 1:18

John 1:18

"No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him."

I have never seen God. My frail human mind could never withstand even a passing glimpse of our Heavenly Father. If God were to pull back the curtain separating the physical from the spiritual realm, and He was to show Himself to me, I would die. It says it in the Bible, in Exodus 33:20: "But He said, 'You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live'". That's pretty amazing. What is God that I can't even look at Him for fear of my head exploding? At least that's how I imagine death would come to someone who looked upon God's infinite glory. We can all be thankful I'm not God, because if I was, I may show myself to people time and again just to see their heads explode. I'd probably end up looking in a mirror, seeing my reflection, and blowing my own head up. Then we'd be in trouble. Still, what does it mean that God's glory cannot be seen by man? It means we're worshipping the right God, first of all. What kind of power is it to kill men just by looking at the source of that power? That's the type of power we have when we surrender our lives to the will of God and are filled with His Holy Spirit. Who can come against us? Can Satan? 1 John 4:4 says, "You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world." So that rules him out. And who is Satan? He is the ruler of this earth, and he has the world in his hands. He offered the whole world to Jesus if only He would worship him in the desert. So if Satan is the top dog in this world, and God is infinitely greater than Satan, what do I have to fear?
