Thousands Cancel AARP Memberships to Protest Obamacare

Conservative American Seniors Association Benefits from AARP's Loss

Kim Linton
CBS News Investigative Correspondent Sharyl Attkission's video report AARP Backlash, reveals a sobering trend for the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).

Because of AARP's supposed support of President Obama's health care plan, as many as 60,000 people have canceled their AARP memberships since the beginning of July.

President Obama's false AARP assumption

During a town hall meeting at Portsmouth High School in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, President Obama confidently stated that AARP had already endorsed his health care plan.

"We have the AARP on board because they know this is a good deal for our seniors." The President went on to say, "Well, first of all, another myth that we've been hearing about is this notion that somehow we're going to be cutting your Medicare benefits. We are not. AARP would not be endorsing a bill if it was undermining Medicare, okay?"

Unfortunately for President Obama, AARP has not officially endorsed any health care plan or bill. AARP issued this statement after the Portsmouth town hall meeting, "While the President was correct that AARP will not endorse a health care reform bill that would reduce Medicare benefits, indications that we have endorsed any of the major health care reform bills currently under consideration in Congress are inaccurate."

American Senior Association benefits from health care debate

According to Attkission's report, many of AARP's former members have already joined the conservative American Senior Association (ASA). In an effort to take advantage of AARP's loss, the ASA is currently conducting a special membership drive. Here's a statement from the ASA website,

"The American Seniors Association invites any American Association of Retired Persons member to mail us your torn AARP card and receive a 2 year-for-1 year membership with ASA. ASA is looking out for seniors by fighting a health care reform bill that will cost upward of $1.8 trillion over the next 10 years and cuts in Medicare of $500 billion."

Will AARP endorse the health care bill?

What does this sudden mass exodus mean for AARP? Probably not much since they are large enough to lose several thousand members and still be strong. However, even with their denial of endorsing Obama's health care bill, AARP has made it very clear that they agree with most of the health care provisions currently on the table. If the organization officially endorses the bill, the American Senior Association may be in for a surprisingly large increase in membership.

For all you AARP members who say great coverage, great plans, you have not looked around.
Everything AARP offered, was either not available in my area, or was much higher priced than what I already had.
Don't just accept the things you hear or see about AARP. Open your eyes, and look around.
I dropped out of the membership as it offers no real benifits to seniors in my opinion, plus I saved the membership fee for better things to make my life comfortable.
I have heard others say, AARP is a large organized scam outfit that preys on seniors. They too shopped around, and did better elsewhere.

Thanks for the opportunity to comment. AARP only lets you sign a support position; you cannot voice opposition to this terrible bill. I don't want the government in my bedroom and I don't want the government in my doctors office. They will only screw it up. And for AARP to mortgage the future of our great-great grandkids is a appaling.

I am dismayed that the leadership would endorse the health "conform" bill in Congress. TAKE ME OFF YOU MAILING LIST
AND DO NOT SOLICIT ME TO EVER JOIN YOUR
    LIBERABLE AGENDA.

Just called AARP and found out they have no zero premium medicare advantage plan for Philadelphia, PA. I asked because IBC has canceled its zero premium plan due to Obama's severe cuts to medicare advantage insurers. AARP has betrayed us big time.
