It's the same story many animal advocates have been hearing for the last few months about such places all over the country. Others include Collin County, Lake Dallas, Brownwood, Dallas, Carrollton, and the White Settlement Animal Shelter.
If you are interested and able to foster one or more of the animals from the shelters listed above, with the exception of White Settlement, contact Nancy Underwood, a local animal activist and volunteer at nancycunderwood@gmail.com. She can arrange transport, vetting, and financing and says she just needs people to provide actual homes until these creatures are adopted out.
If you would like to adopt one of these animals Underwood will cover adoption fees which cover full vetting but you must contact her through her email address above before going to adopt.
"I know people must be overwhelmed," she said. "Yes, there is an animal overpopulation problem, but this is not normal - it has to get better."
Take Yukon and Kodiak, for instance. They are two dogs who had been removed from the virtual shelter and Petfinder.com because it was thought they had an firm adopter who was to pick them up June 3 but he didn't get them.
The Irving Shelter telephone number is 972-721-2256 or 972-721-2257. Shelter hours are Mon.-Fri., 11-6 and Sat. noon to 5 p.m. Sunday they are closed.
The Arlington Animal Shelter has a link where you can see pictures and kennel cards which provide the bio information at fototime.com/inv/7FFE27F14A8E83A.
The Ferris Animal Shelter is small and completely inundated right now, according to Underwood. It is about 15 minutes south of Dallas off I-45 and will also be open Saturday and Sunday if coming by on those days is a preference.
For information, call Misty at 817-877-1210 or email her at misty@mytocn.com though a phone call may be much quicker, Underwood said.
In June there were dogs looking for homes such as Mia and Lia, a baby female Boxer Mix possibly, six weeks old and Lindsey, a female Bulldog/Dogo mix described as "very sweet."
In unrelated animal news, Operation Kindness (OK), a no-kill Carrollton animal shelter, is having pet adoptions the third Saturday of each month from 12-4 at the Whole Foods Market, 2201 Preston Road in Plano.
For more information, call 972-612-6729.
The last Sunday of every month OK also has a microchipping clinic at their office located at 3201 Earheart Drive.
The shelter is closed the last Tuesday of each month for Staff Development Day.
