Three Best Beatles Songs

A Tough Decision

It occurred to me that in order to come up with my favorite Beatles songs all I had to do was think back to the day that I loaded all the songs on my mp3 player. There was an order to my madness that day. I ended up with a huge number of Beatles' songs on it, but I remember which ones I added first. They were "In My Life," "I Saw Her Standing There," and "Here Comes the Sun." I didn't realize until now that each of these songs showcases a different band member's talent. This is assuming that what I have heard is correct. That is that the songs credited to John Lennon and Paul McCartney were usually written by one or the other and the way to know which one wrote it is by who sung it.

"In My Life," a John Lennon song, is one of the most meaningful love songs of all times and showcases Lennon's talent for lyrics. Not only does he get right to the heart of the matter with his words, the music, soft and understated, is perfectly matched to the lyrics. This is a beautiful song of never-ending love and devotion. It is, after all, a song by John Lennon, and I'd expect nothing less from an artist of this caliber.

"I Saw Her Standing There" by Paul McCartney is just plain fun. From the beginning count to the last note, McCartney makes the listener feel good. To me, this song has always symbolized the feeling of that first love. Of course, McCartney, one of the most talented musicians of all time, has written beautiful love songs and ballads, and all are wonderful. This song makes my list of favorites because it is upbeat, fun, and great to sing along with.

"Here Comes the Sun" by George Harrison is a song of hope. He is telling the listener that even though things might not have been going wonderfully, everything is about to get better. He says, "Little Darlin' it's been a long, cold, lonely winter." But, he says, "Here comes the sun. And I say, it's alright." Harrison was always referred to as the "quiet Beatle," but that definitely does not mean that he didn't possess the same musical talent as Lennon and McCartney. He was an unbelievably talented singer, songwriter, and guitarist.

Of course, there are literally hundreds of wonderful songs by the Beatles, and if I were to sit down to write this article next week, my choices could be different. I can honestly say that they only ever recorded two songs that I didn't care for. They changed the course of musical history, had a deep impact on society, and their music has stood the test of time like no other. All these years later, other musicians still want to record their songs and still cite The Beatles as a source of inspiration. The ultimate compliment, though, is that people of all ages love their music.
