Three of the Best Nora Ephron Movies

Favorite Nora Ephron Films

Ashley Mott
Nora Ephron has not been a writer, director, and producer who has cranked out a movie a year or a project at any regular interval. However, many of the projects that she has released out into the universe have become favorite films of their specific moment in time. Nora Ephron has been involved with several movies that I have loved, and it is difficult to pick out three absolute favorites. The three projects featured below each encompass a little something different in terms of the beauty of Nora Ephron's filmmaking.

You've Got Mail - 1998

You've Got Mail is an all-time favorite movie of mine. The film brought back the classic pairing of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan from a previous Nora Ephron effort, Sleepless in Seattle. You've Got Mail made better use of both of these talented actors by having them interact face to face more than the plotline of Sleepless in Seattle allowed. You've Got Mail works as a romance, a comedy, and a postcard to city life as good, if not better, than its 1940 counterpart, The Shop Around the Corner which starred James Stewart and Margaret Sullivan.

From the beginning to the end the movie brings witty and heart-warming laughter to the viewer while providing them with a look at the beauty that can be found in life within New York City. The beauty of the city and a love for the city is reflected on many times throughout the movie, and it is enduring. The landscape coupled with the wonderful soundtrack and the stars made You've Got Mail a romantic comedy landmark.

My Blue Heaven - 1990

Nora Ephron wrote My Blue Heaven which debuted in 1990 with Rick Moranis and Steve Martin as a dedicated FBI agent and a turn-coat mobster respectively. The movie features Steve Martin in one of his funnier roles and Rick Moranis outside of the Honey I Shrunk the Kids mold he later became stuck in. The film also features Joan Cusack in a very funny role as a somewhat bitter DA and has Carol Kane as a small but funny supportive wife.

Julie & Julia - 2009

Julie & Julia was a brilliant adaptation of the book Julie & Julia which chronicled the day to day experiences of a woman named Julie who went through Julia Child's The Art of French Cooking over the course of 365 days. She documented the entire experience on a blog which was later adapted into the book. Nora Ephron adapted the book into a screenplay beautifully and gave the entire project a charm that the original blog lacked. The interspersing of moments in the life of Julia Child was done flawlessly.

Nora Ephron has contributed a great deal to American filmmaking in the projects she has done thus far in her career.
