Three of the Best Pet Stores in Richmond, VA

S.D Ford
Growing up, I remember my parents always looking for a new pet store when we moved. Most the time we would find a couple that we would go to for different items. For example, one pet store would have more dog items, while another had all we needed for our birds, but it took time and money before we found which was better for different things. This list is to help new people to the Richmond, VA area cut that time down. Or if you've been in Richmond awhile and just haven't had the time to search this list can help.

This list is of smaller, family owned pet stores. There are several PetSmarts (www.petsmart.com) located though out the Richmond area and for the most part are well stocked with a verity of pet needs, though the staff isn't always as knowledgeable as one would like. For that and locally made items, the family owned pet stores are a better bet. The ones listed below have been in operation several years and are not fly by night operations.

One pet store that I love is the Pet Club. The selection is wonderful of both live animals and supplies. One of the best points is that, even though they are family owned there are three Pet Clubs through out the Richmond area. All of the stores are clean, the animals well cared for and the staff knowledgeable.

The Pet Club can be found at these locations;

1) 2009 Huguenot Rd. (804)272-3540,
2) 1517 N. Parham Rd. (804)282-0790, and
3) 10454 Ridgefield Pkwy (804) 741-5078

PetTails is the place to buy birds. Their birds are hand tamed and the nicest you'll ever meet. Most of the birds come from local breeders that meet with the owner's standards and all of your bird supply needs can be meant here as well. The staff is top notch and trained to answer your question and if they don't know then they will find out for you. If there is an item you need that PetTails doesn't carry, they will special order it or find where you can go to get it. PetTails also carries small animals, fish, reptiles, and pet supplies. Rt 360 at Genito Rd. (804) 744-8672

If you are looking for more rare small animals, such as sugar gliders and hedgehogs then go to Noah's Pets. This pet store is very small but very clean and happy. Their animals are well cared for and locally breed. They also have one of the largest reptile selections in the area. 14243 Midlothian Tnpk (804)379-8335

There several other pet stores in the Richmond area. Perfect Pets (www.perfectpetsofva.com) has only been around for a little over a year and not as established as others. For all of your saltwater fish needs there are Fish World (804-379-2466) and Atlantis (www.AtlantisVA.com). If you are looking for a puppy from a breeder but don't the time to call individuals you can go to Pauley's Pups (www.pauleyspups.com), and they are only a short drive from Richmond.

I hope this list was helpful to all pet lovers!

I purchased my dog from Pauley's Pups back in 2004. He is healthy and happy as ever. The staff was very friendly and I have no regrets.

I agree with everyone who has concerns about Pauleys Pups. My mother and I each bought miniature dachshunds from them. We bought them 2 years apart and was the worst mistake. Both of our babies had so many health issues. The lastest purchase, 5 yrs ago and never again, our puppy had a heart defect. We paid for her surgery, but they did not want to give us any of our money back for her. We did not ask for a full refund, just partial. They just said to bring her back and they would euthanize her! NO WAY! We were not going to put that precious puppy down. We had her surgery, and they finally agreed to refund us 50% of her purchase price back. They buy from puppy mills. Please if considering buying from them, dont. We rescued two puppies, but still feel dirty for supporting their income...

Please visit your local animal shelter if you're loking to adopt, or the Pet Club stores on Huguenot and Parham Roads are a safehouse for Southside SPCA kittens and cats looking for homes (and they're all spayed/neutered, tested and vaccinated). You can view and adopt kittens right their in the store, 7 days a week!!

I would recommend Pauley's Pups. I know the owners and have no concerns.

just go to pauleys and take puppy at gunpoint!!!

I do not think it is good or even reasonable to put Pauley's Pups in the same artical with these other stores, unless you are telling people not to go there. They are definately not a good place to buy a pet. People should take the time if they would like a purebred puppy to find a responsible breeder, meet with them, and then make a decision. This place is over run, not clean and a lot of their puppies have major health problems. That tends to happen when you are dealing with a Puppy mill. I hope people will not go there for a pet, when we are killing pets in shelters.

I wouldn't advertise any pet stores...especially since hearing about how pet stores=puppymills. you should probably research more about puppy mills and pet stores before suggesting pet stores to others. just a suggestion.

Please do not advertise Pauley's Pups, do you know their business practices?
