Three Causes for Hip Joint Pain

Regina Paul
The purpose of the hip joint is to connect the leg to the torso. The femur rotates in the pelvic bones inside the hip joint. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, hip pain sometimes is not felt right over the hip, it's possible to feel it in the thigh or the groin. Also, there are instances in which hip pain is indicative of back problems rather than hip problems.

Hip Fractures

One of the most common causes for hip pain are hip fractures. The older someone is, the easier it is for them to suffer a hip fracture because the bones become less dense, and falls are more common in older people. Less than 50 percent of people who were treated for a hip fracture are as active as they were before they fractured their hip. In addition, there are further health complications that can arise as a result of having a hip fracture. Two of the main complications are pneumonia and blood clots in the leg. A blood clot can develop in the leg, then come loose and go to the lungs where it will develop into another blood clot there. Both pneumonia and blood clots develop because a person cannot move much during recovery from a fractured hip and the resultant surgery that often comes with it.

Arthritis

Arthritis is an inflammation in the joints, and with regard to hip pain, it means that there is inflammation of the hip joint. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis associated with hip pain. However, other kinds of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis also can cause hip pain. Arthritis that is connected to inflammatory bowel disease can also be present.

Bursa Inflammation

Bursae are fluid-filled areas near joints where the tendons or muscles go over a place where the bone projects out. In the case of the hip, the bursa s called the trochanteric bursa, and it is on the outside of the hip. This bursa protects the tendons and muscles as they go over the bony area of the femur. If this bursa becomes inflamed because of overuse, or trauma, this can cause hip pain.
