Three Common Sleep Disorders that Can Affect Job Performance

John Smith
In order to be properly focused and display proper job performance, a person needs to have an ample amount of sleep the night before. However, there are a number of common sleep disorders that can disrupt this sleep, causing people to have trouble staying focused and alert while on the clock. In certain professions, one must constantly be awake and alert in order to maintain the safety of himself or herself, as well as other people that may be affected by the person's lack of sleep. Three of the most common sleep disorders that affect job performance are restless legs syndrome, sleep apnea, and insomnia.

Restless legs syndrome is one sleep disorder that can severely impact job performance. This condition often causes a person to have pain in their arms and legs, causing them to lose sleep due to the discomfort. Because of the pain, people tend to toss and turn a lot because they feel the urge to move their limbs. While this can happen at anytime, it often occurs when a person is trying to sleep, causing them to feel tired the next day. Medication can be prescribed by a doctor to help with the condition.

Another common sleep disorder that can affect job performance is sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is when a persons airway closed while a person is asleep. This is due to the fact that a person with this disorder's muscles relax too much. When this occurs, it can feel like a person is choking and not receiving enough air. This, in turn, causes a person to wake up during the night and can occur multiple times throughout the night. The next day, a person may feel as though he or she has had little or no sleep, severely impacting their job performance.

Insomnia is yet another common sleep disorder that can affect job performance. This condition is categorized by the fact that a person simply cannot fall asleep over a long period of time. There are a number of reasons why a person may develop insomnia, but they all cause a person to not get enough rest. Like with other sleep disorders, it can be extremely detrimental to a person's job performance.
