Three Common Ways a Man Handles a Breakup

Karl Withakay
Men aren't really that much different than women concerning the way we feel after a breakup. Our pain is just as real as a woman's pain. We just handle it differently. Not all of them are good ways to handle breakups, but it's our way.

Alcohol

Yeah, that's right. There are thousands of country songs based on this very thing. She breaks his heart, he calls up a few buddies, and goes out to the bar to get toasted. Now that's not usually a good thing to do. Men know this but few stop the behavior. Alcohol inflates emotions. If you're happy and you get drunk, you'll be the life of the party. If you're mad and you get drunk, you'll get in a bar fight. If you're sad or depressed when you get drunk, you're going to turn into a crying in your beer idiot. So considering that a guy is more likely to be sad, depressed, or angry after a breakup than it is for him to be happy, drinking after a breakup usually makes things worse. I've done this on a few occasions over the years. If I was at a buddies house drinking, I'd get all emotional and sad. If I was at a bar, I'd get into a bar fight. I must say though. After one tough breakup, my good friend got me stoned. (Thanks Laura) I had quit smoking marijuana for my girlfriend. She dumped me, I was down and sad. I got high, ate a crunchy peanut butter and marshmallow fluff sandwich (thanks again Laura) and I was just fine. That's just another advantage of marijuana over alcohol but I'll go into that in another article.

Isolation

When a guy gets all emotional, he doesn't like to be around people. Especially his friends that will say stuff like, "You OK buddy?" We know they mean well but we don't want anyone's pity. We just want to be alone for a bit while we lick our wounds. It's a guy thing. We can't help it. It's the testosterone.

Go Out, Find A Girl Who Is Prettier Than The Ex And Try To Hook Up

Not cool really but not uncommon. There is a logical explanation and it has nothing to do with "Men are pigs". You see, when guy has to handle a breakup, he feels down on himself. He may feel emotionally neglected but he defiantly feels sad. (even if he denies it). It's pretty normal for a guy to go out and try to find some temporary love to get jiggy with in an attempt to fill the hole left behind by the breakup. In the end though, the new woman often gets hurt and that's too bad.

There you have it. If you just dumped your man, he may be out with with another woman. He may have gotten arrested from being in a bar fight. He may be crying in his beer. He may just be alone at his house watching Internet porn. But he will recover.
