Three Conservative Newspapers Kicked Off of Obama's Airplane

Sheryl Young
On Friday, reporters from three newspapers were asked to leave Obama's campaign airplane. The Washington Times, New York Post and Dallas Morning News were all asked to vacate their seats on the plane for the final campaign weekend, to make room for other reporters.

All of these newspapers had recently endorsed John McCain. According to a Friday Washington Times story, a spokesperson for the Obama campaign denies that this bears any connection to the selection of these three newspapers being asked to leave.

Opinion Editorialist Maureen Dowd of the New York Times, who has often taken shots at John McCain, was asked to relinquish her seat on John McCain's airplane earlier this year (before the NY Times endorsed Obama). However, the fact that the Obama campaign has chosen journalistic reporters from three conservative papers to leave at one time, while not asking the same of any liberal news outlets, has raised more eyebrows.

Spokespeople for the Obama campaign are denying to various news outlets that this bears any connection to the selection of these three newspapers being asked to leave. Although there is as of yet no evidence that Fox News - also known for its conservative edge - has been ousted, there is no other explanation being given why these three specific papers were chosen to vacate.

The Washington Times received an e-mail from Obama advisor and communications chief Anita Dunn stating the "demand for seats on the plane during this final weekend has far exceeded supply."

The Dallas Morning News endorsed John McCain on October 18. One week later, editor Bob Mong, Jr. was told there would possibly be no room on the plane.

Newspapers pay their own way to send reporters on campaign airplanes. They are not paid by campaigns.

The Obama paranoia about dissenting news media continues.... Has there ever been an administration more concerned with image and controlling media than this one?

  • J P Whickson1/9/2009

Wow. I think I missed this during the campaign..We'll know pretty soon what's going to happen with the new administration.

That's what concerns me, Charlene, that if people get too caught up in the whole, "cannot criticise or laugh at Obama because its racist" fear, there will be an uprising in white supremicists and that's the last thing we need. Then the white supremcists will rekindle the whole hate thing and we will continue to be mired in racial tension instead of working towards harmony between races.

This whole campaign process was so terribly slanted to the left it isn't funny. Now everyone has to handle Obama with kid gloves because it will be said to be racial if they don't. Comedians that always make fun of presidents can't find anything to say about Obama? Why? Because the dems won't like it? Why not just treat him like every other president and be honest about it.

You analyse things in an objective manner and put forth arguments just like a lawyer.Great.

    Outstanding reporting!!

Fine. He kicked out reporters he didn't want there during the victory or defeat. Ok. They can still print whatever they want, they just don't have a seat next to Obama. If I were the canidate and the night of reckoning was coming, I'd want friendly folks with me-- not reporters who had endorsed the other guy...I feel the same about McCain dropping liberal reporters. Of course he'd have to drop lots more than 3...

First, I was commenting on Sheryl's Hitler statement, not the article. Secondly, re: name-calling, I only called George W. Bush an idiot--hardly a major revelation. Thirdly, I do think some people are threatened by the idea that a black man named Barack Obama will be president. You may not be one of them, but sorry folks, racism still exists in this country. Fourthly (is there such a thing?), Charles, I'm sorry I made you weep. I had no idea my writing was that powerful. Finally, Sheryl, you and I have had many great discussions privately and I hope you know that I respect you and your views. I am deeply sorry if my comments came across as anything other than that. Love and Peace to all!

People like Frank make me weep for this country. Nice piece Sheryl!

  • Anne Bryant11/6/2008

No Frank, I think you are wrong. I don't think that Obama is going to do any of the things you say. Nobody here is threatened by the existance or election of Obama. You might get out out your dictionary and determine the difference between "threatened" and "concerned". What concerns most of us is the very behavior you have shown by once again calling someone names when it wasn't necessary or relevant to the conversation. Sheryl's article dealt with an incident that happened, an exclusionary action,a behavior that has been common throughout Obama's campaign. It isn't Obama that we are particularly concerned about, it is rabid supporters and partisans that want to continue the fight... like you.
