When you first arrive in Pittsburgh you should take a drive up to Mt. Washington so that you can get a great view of the city. You want to walk around the area and get the feel of the great city. Spend some time watching the Dancing Water fountain, see all the holiday lights and then take in one of the night clubs or the comedy club to finish off your evening.
After this experience you will want to head on over to the hotel of your choice. There are plenty of them located in the city and all around the suburbs.
