Three Delicious Sea Salt Recipes

Jill P. Viers
Long ago, I wrote an article that shared some tips and some common pitfalls of cooking with sea salt. In this article, I share three fun ways to use sea salt deliciously.

Margarita with a Sea Salt Rim

I got the idea for this while watching "The Real Housewives of New York City". On that show, Bethenny Frankel shared her SkinnyGirlâ„¢ Margarita recipe. Instead of using margarita mix, loaded with sugar and calories, use lime juice to flavor the drink.

Ingredients:

2 oz. tequila (Patron Silver is the best)

1 oz. Triple Sec, Grand Marnier or Cointreau

Rose's Sweetened Lime Juice (to taste)

Slice of lime

Sea Salt

Directions:

  1. Pour desired amount of sea salt onto a plate (paper plates work well).
  2. Use the lime wedge to "rim" the glass (make sure enough juice gets all the way around the rim so the salt will stick).
  3. Roll the rim of the glass around in the sea salt.
  4. Pour in all liquid ingredients.
  5. Add ice.
  6. Stir, taste, make any changes, and enjoy!

Salmon with Sea Salt, Lemon, and Dill

    Serving size: 2

    Ingredients:

2 salmon fillets (approximately 1 lb. unless you want more fish)

1 lemon, cut into slices to place on the fish while it's baking

    Green onions to taste

Sea salt and black pepper to taste

Dried or fresh dill weed to taste

Minced garlic or crushed garlic to taste

    Butter or olive oil

    Directions:

    1. Heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

    2. Place salmon fillets skin side down in a greased baking pan (any size works as long as the fish fits it well). *Line the pan with foil to make it easier to clean up.

    3. Spread the green onions across each piece of fish.

    4. Sprinkle the sea salt, black pepper, dill weed, and garlic on the fish.

    5. Place the lemon slices across each piece of fish (they will cook along with the fish, allowing the lemon flavor to seep in to the salmon).

    6. Put your desired amount of butter or olive oil around/on top of the fish so it will bake in and add flavor (to keep it healthier, use less, because it's going to have plenty of flavor anyway).

    7. Bake in preheated oven for 20-30 minutes or until the fish flakes easily with a fork.

    8. If you're like me, you will want to squeeze more out of the lemons onto the fish before serving. Additionally, you can add more sea salt, black pepper, and dill to add even more flavor.

This is really good with a sauce made with sour cream, mayo, lemon juice, horseradish, sea salt, black pepper, dill weed, onion flakes, and garlic.

Marinade with Sea Salt, Olive Oil, and Black Pepper

    (Top with feta cheese)

This marinade can be used on a variety of meats and veggies, but one of my favorite ways to use it is on a nice lean pork chop. It's very simple to mix and enjoy.

I have to admit, when it comes to this marinade, I don't measure out the ingredients accurately. I just mix some stuff together, taste test it, and modify as needed.

    Ingredients:

    Sea salt

Black pepper and/or crushed green peppercorns

    Olive oil

    Crushed or minced garlic

    Onion flakes

    Crushed red pepper flakes

    Feta cheese

    Directions:

Mix all ingredients (except the feta) together in a Ziploc bag. Add the meat and/or veggies you want to marinate. Set on a plate or in a bowl in the refrigerator for half an hour to two hours. After cooking, top with feta cheese.
