Three Easy Felt Christmas Decorations that You Can Make

Tiffany Bell
Using felt to make Christmas decorations is an easy and inexpensive way to decorate your home for Christmas. Felt comes in a wide range of colors and is quite inexpensive when compared to other craft materials. Felt Christmas decorations are also an easy way to get your younger children involved in making Christmas decorations and items. There are a variety of different felt Christmas decorations that you can make or that your children can make for Christmas. Here are some suggestions on felt Christmas decorations that will help decorate your home these holidays.

Felt Christmas Ornaments

Here is a very easy way that you can make felt Christmas ornaments for your Christmas tree this year. Take several sheets of different colored felt. Using a pencil, trace the outline of Christmas cookie cutter shapes onto the felt. You can use such Christmas objects as gingerbread men, Christmas tree, star, stocking, bell, and snowmen. Cut out two of the exact shapes and colors for each felt Christmas ornament that you want to make. Take some fabric glue and glue the felt pieces back to back, so that each side of the felt Christmas ornament shows the nice side of the felt. Punch a hole in the top of the felt Christmas ornament and tie a ribbon through the hole so you can hang the Christmas ornament. Now, here's the fun part. Take glitter, beads, sequins, buttons, and ribbon and decorate your felt Christmas ornaments using the fabric glue. This is a simple Christmas craft that kids will enjoy making.

Felt Christmas Stocking

Instead of buying your felt Christmas stockings for your family, you can easily make them. All you need is a needle and thread that matches the color of the felt you are working with. You may also want to use fabric glue to reinforce the seam on the felt Christmas stocking. You can find free patterns for stockings online or you can draw your own Christmas stocking the size that you want it. Cut out the pattern from the felt twice, so that you have the exact same shape. Place some glue around the edge of the one of the pieces of felt on the wrong side. Place the other felt piece over the top and glue the two felt pieces together to form your felt Christmas stocking. To reinforce the seam, take a needle and thread and make a simple stitch along the outside of the felt Christmas stocking. It is okay that you see the stitching as it gives the felt Christmas stocking your own personal touch. Decorate your felt Christmas stocking with ribbon, beads, and sequins. Or you can use the another color of felt and cut out the letters in your name and glue them onto the felt Christmas stocking to personalize the stocking. These also make cute Christmas gifts to other people.

Felt Christmas placemats

You can make felt Christmas placemats for your kitchen table the same way that you make the felt Christmas stocking. Determine how large you want your Christmas placemats and glue two pieces of felt together with fabric glue back to back so that each side has the nice side of the felt showing. Take a needle and thread and sew a simple seam along the sides of the Christmas placemats. Decorate the felt Christmas placemats with anything that you like. You can run a ribbon border around the edge of the placemats if you don't want the seam showing. A cute idea is to personalize the felt Christmas placemats for every one in your house. Cut out their names from another color of felt and glue them onto the placemats. Or you can let each person in the family decorate their own felt Christmas placemat in whatever way they want.
