Three Essential Points for Good Article Writing

Basic Principles of Writing Good Articles

Sunny Peter
Are you currently working on an article or preparing to write an article either for a publication, blog, company newsletter or anything at all. Many a times I have found myself lost in the quagmire of thought not being able to find the direction as vividly as I did when I set out to work on the article. Based on my experience and have spend time thinking about it, I happened to chronicle some thoughts in this regard which I believe will be of some value for anyone who is currently working or even attempting to write an article. I realized that there are three basic principles which we need to adhere to if we want to produce good articles. These three basic principles may look as simple, but to practice them in our writing takes the devotion and dedication of a swordsman. Why do I say a swordsman; the reason is pretty simple - many of us may be looking to make a living out of writing article - our failure to write good articles is definitely a sure shot formulae for the demise of our writing endeavor.
  • The first principle is Focus: Keep your focus on the core aspects of the article that you are writing. It is obvious that you would be doing substantial research on the topic before you begin your work. Though this research is an integral part of writing an article, it is very important to keep in mind that you are looking for and not lose your focus. You will come across many aspects during the course of your research which will be vying for your attention. Desist from getting into that booby-trap. If there is a sustainable idea for another article that comes to your mind so be it. Just make a note of it. If the idea is strong enough you will search it down from wherever you have noted it and if it is not of value it will be lost on its own.
  • The second principle is Focus: Focus on the theme that you are writing about. Beyond the realm of research when you actually sit to complete the article you must have your primary focus on the topic. Write the heading somewhere in bold. Do not lose focus of it. Keep up the momentum. Many a times towards the middle of an article, readers find that the author has lost his or her focus. Remember, a lost focus in an article is like a broken glass. You may stick it with glue but it will still show.
  • The third principle is focus: Focus on the end. Now this is debatable. As a pure researcher may find this an improper approach to say that you must focus on the end, even before you write your article. But there is a more principled argument. The fact is that when you are writing articles you are writing it for an audience. Your purpose is to keep your audience engrossed with your contentions and opinions. But as a writer you will soon realize that it is either difficult to keep up the momentum or it is difficult to stop the momentum. You could go on writing pages after pages and words upon words and still feel that you have a lot more to say. The sense of incompleteness may traumatize you. But your emotional outpouring about a topic even if it is to pass through the editor may exhaust your readers. Hence it is important to write to achieve optimum utilization of words that you use. It helps to check out the guidelines of the length of the content beforehand rather than decide to write and then reduce the length. Editing may be easy when you are doing a non-serious job but for a serious writer it is very difficult to put down the pen and take up the scalpel.

I have realized that the three principles that I have listed above are not easy to put into practice as they might sound. However, our ability to produce great articles will depend on our ability to adopt these three basic principles

As an article writer the one worry that we all have is being fatigued. I face this always and I have been seeking to find mechanisms and solutions to keep up my momentum. Keep reading here or on my blog www.wordsofworth.wordpress.com for more on this.
