Three Fall Allergy Remedies You Haven't Tried

Sylvie Branch
My oldest son has a dual problem, not only does he suffer from fall allergies, he hates taking allergy medication. As an athlete, he would rather suffer than feel "fuzzy in the head," or tired. So we have been on the hunt for different treatments that will bring some much needed relief. The neti pot, washing hands frequently and local honey have been stand-by treatments. I thought I had heard it all until a recent edition of Women's World revealed some easy strategies.

Walnuts Reduce Sensitivity

Apparently, the alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) in walnuts supercharges the immune system. This dampens the body's reaction to pollen according to Fred Pescatore M.D. Allergy sufferers are encouraged to increase omega-3 fats through an ounce of walnuts a day. This will not be a hard sell for my son. It reminds me of the locally grown honey cure. Although some studies have discredited the theory that honey helps allergy sufferers, I disagree. Locally grown honey has given family members relief from their symptoms, has no side effects and is a delicious bit of medicine.

End never-ending sniffles with a boost of powdered greens

I guess I need to share my powered greens. In the Natural Choice for Women's Health, Laurie Steelsmith, N.D. says that "Powdered greens help your immune system react properly, even when it is being exposed to allergens." A tablespoon of powered greens, full of rich chlorophyll, amino acids and enzymes combined in a glass of grape juice can cut allergy symptoms as much as 32%. In my personal experience the best way to make powered greens palatal is to make the concoction up in a blender along with a handful of ice cubes. A cold green slushy is easier to drink than a warm mixture.

Shrink Inflammation with Rooibos Tea

This treatment dampen the production of symptom triggering histamine within days of starting a tea habit. Two cups of ruby-red tea a day will flood your body with flavonoids. This tea is not hard to find, and it is tasty enough for a teen to enjoy. Celestial Seasonings and Yogi tea both carry Red Rooibos tea. I made it into iced tea which is perfect while the weather is still sweltering hot. Personally, I love the Chai Rooibos tea. Soothing and sweet for a nice change of pace.

Walnuts, a green slushy, and daily doses of tea, along with a spoonful of honey, do not require a hard sell. These natural remedies can be easily be incorporated into daily life without much change in the grocery budget, or the way we eat. Yet, these little steps can add up to big relief without nasty side effects.
