Three Father's Day Poems About the Love of Dads

Writer M J Joachim
Memories

A memory has come along

That tugs at my heart

A father's day from long ago

On a beach in California

Dad was sick that year

With cancer

The last Father's Day we'd have

Ocean waves were pounding

Wind was blowing sand

As we looked at the horizon

Dolphins gathered, jumping high

And flipping in the air

Father's Day was special then

Without cooking on the grill

It was about being together

With the man who loved me

From my beginning

He's waiting for me now

Somewhere far away from here

Yet he's as close as the wind

When I seek his memory

Beating the Odds

Strong and tall, he held his son

An infant that fit in his hand

A premature child born just for him

The proudest father in all the land

He held his tiny baby boy and smiled

With tender emotion, he tried not to cry

His heart was overflowing, yet breaking

When he thought his little son might die

His baby, so fragile, knew his dad's love

As he fought, hanging onto his life

Such strength was provided to help him grow

While he conquered health's bitter strife

Before his dad knew it, he was on his way home

Having beaten the odds stacked so high

The little boy fought from the moment of birth

His dad's steadfast love was the reason why

Conversations with Dad

Yes dad, I heard you

You want me off the phone.

What's that? I've gone over

My minutes again?

No dad, you must be wrong.

Can you take me to the mall, dad?

Will you loan me a few dollars?

I need a ride to work, dad.

My boyfriend will pick me up.

What do you mean you don't

Like me seeing him?

Dad, you're so old fashioned.

You need to get a clue.

I'm not going to get into trouble

Like some of those other kids at school.

I made it, dad, through college

That old boyfriend was a jerk.

You were right, dad.

I'm glad you paid attention.

You noticed what I'm worth.
