Three Free Online Algebra Video Websites to Supplement or Reteach Concepts

A Teacher's Dream - Free Online Videos to Reteach Algebra Topics

Kristen Wilkerson
As more students have Internet access in their homes, teachers can utilize the Internet to either supplement or reteach concepts. This is true with algebra as well, using websites that post free algebra topic videos. If a student cannot afford a tutor, these algebra videos may offer some relief. This article shares some online resources for math teachers and math students who wish to learn via video.

Khan Academy
The Khan Academy website is a powerhouse of over 1800 free videos. Primarily focused on math and science courses, the Khan Academy provides 79 free algebra videos on various subjects. In addition, another 185 videos demonstrate worked algebra problems for students as extra practice. The algebra instruction is detailed and includes explanations of why particular algebra rules exist. This sound teaching approach uses various colors as well, grabbing students' attention. A classroom teacher can utilize these algebra videos during instruction, becoming a facilitator by pausing the video as needed and pointing out particular details.

Algebasics
The Algebasics website features 16 algebra chapters or categories. Within each, an instructor leads the viewer through several worked algebra problems. The instruction is primarily surface knowledge, but provides additional problems as sequenced examples for various algebra subjects. The videos on Algebasics are free, but the links on the right side of the screen connect to a pay website, so be careful. The layout of this site mimics an algebra textbook, so it is easy to follow.

HippoCampus Algebra
The HippoCampus website breaks the algebra videos into sections of Algebra 1A, Algebra 1B, and Elementary Algebra. In addition, it helps Spanish speaking students by offering the tutorials in Spanish for algebra and calculus. From religion, psychology, history, and physics, this website also posts free video instruction in other subjects. The algebra tutorials are well done with a voice-over explanation. Students may pause the video as needed for time to work out the problems. In addition, various algebra textbooks are listed, allowing students to reference a particular chapter.

Other Free Non-Video Resources
If you have a slow internet connection or wish to print out algebra instructions, then the following websites are available. Some of these include the Purple Math Website or the Shmoop website.

Overall, using online algebra videos not only offers students a second method of explanation, but in these modern days of technology the videos may grab their attention.
