When it comes to horror books, it's usually either a total hit or an awful miss. Some authors are really good while others either don't write well or aren't scary at all. I'm sure most of you have heard of Stephen King, Clive Barker, and Dean Koontz, but let me tell you a little about why I personally like them.
Stephen King: Controversial to say the least, folks seem to either love or hate his work. Some people read "It" and were done with him, while others salivate for more of his masterful storytelling. I greatly enjoy his work because he brings us to places we recognize, uses characters we can identify with, and he knows how to scare the hell out of us. Not all of his work is horror, though, and his fantasy stuff is just as good.
Clive Barker: What can I say about this man? Brilliant, fascinating, terrifying, and brutal, for starters. Clive definitely writes on the "darker" side of things. He is no doubt gorier than King, and his stories are mostly psychologically scary. I absolutely love the way he strings words together, and his ideas are top-notch. His short stories are enough to keep me awake at night, that much I can guarantee.

Stephen King: My Favorite StorytellerFew writers have so accurately described the human condition and psyche as well as Stephen King. His novels are extraordinary.
