Three Great Free Web Sites for Science News

Mark Hudziak

There are a lot of science related websites out there these days. Some, like a lot of technical scientific journals, have access only by subscription, but those typically are for science professionals in a particular discipline. But there are some great websites that appeal to the average person who is interested in the news from the world of science, and science professionals like them too. Here are three websites that anyone interested in science news can read and enjoy.

ScienceDaily.com

This comprehensive science website has been around since 1995. It covers science in every major field and a lot of more obscure ones, too, or as it says on the site "almost every science topic imaginable from astrophysics to zoology".

They're not kidding, either. Eight main large science categories are tabbed at the top of the page, with several sub categories under each tab. Each sub category is broken down further making it easy for the reader to find topics of interest. The site has new releases, articles, photographs, and videos for all categories. Much of the material is submitted to Science Daily directly from researchers, universities, and government agencies, and is selected and edited for publication by ScienceDaily staff. This site is a great resource for teachers, students, science professionals, and anyone with an interest in any scientific field.

Space.com

As the name of the site indicates, Space.com is about all things space. Space related news, space flight, satellites, space probes, astronomy, stargazing, even space related entertainment are all covered. If there is a meteor shower, comet, or a planetary convergence in the night sky, this site is a great resource for the best time and place for viewing. The site also has space related video clips and photographs.

LiveScience.com

Though it doesn't have the sheer volume of material that ScienceDaily has, LiveScience is another comprehensive site covering a very wide range of science topics. Most of the material is written by LiveScience staff writers. The site also has science related video clips and images.

These three sites provide a wealth of science news and information and all at a great price: they're free.
