Three Inexpensive Ideas for Window Treatments

With the economy being in a state of recession, many people feel as though they can't splurge on themselves or their homes in order to create a new and different look. However, this does not have to be the case. This is a guide to inexpensive window treatments that can make any room look as though it's just been made over by a decorator.

The Solid Look

One of my favorite looks for windows is to, instead of installing separate curtains or blinds, simply cover the entire window in one long piece of fabric. This creates a long, rich look and is ideal for winter -especially if done with a thick fabric such as velvet. Wal-Mart currently offers a great red velvet panel that is not only attractive, but at a most agreeable price of $23. If you don't like the idea of velvet, simply purchase a length of your preferred type of fabric and attach it to your curtain rod. Even the least crafty among us can do that! Buying the fabric and attaching it yourself is quite practical and, depending on the price of the fabric, can allow you to rotate your style with every new season.

To the Side

One great look for windows, that is both stylish and inexpensive, is to take a simple curtain and instead of leaving it hanging, bunch it and tie it to the side. The look resembles a Grecian toga and is quite simple and elegant. JC Penney offers this look for the reasonable price of $24.99, with an optional, more expensive back panel that makes your windows more energy efficient. While this is perhaps a common look with the single panel window, it looks quite unique when done with double panel windows -and since you only have to buy one panel of curtain, this look is a great money saver. This is a great look for any season, one that can be easily duplicated by buying fabric yourself.

The Regal Look

My favorite look for window treatments is also by far the least expensive. For $11.75, Overstock.com showcases the regal surrey stripe valance. What I love most about this look, aside from the deep, rich color, is the optional beaded tassel that lies between the curtain panels. Because these curtains are so inexpensive, you can purchase a couple of different colors and alternate your look often, mixing and matching with the tassel to create a unique, yet regal look.
