The first lesson idea is for children in second or third grade and higher, but that is only an estimate. This is a two part lesson that will work on writing and thinking skills. For the first part, have the kids take a piece of notebook paper and make a list of people that love them. Then next to each person write what they could do to make that person happy on Valentine's Day. Then choose one.
The second part is to have the kids write a small report on whether they was able to complete their Valentine's Day mission and what the results were. This is a terrific way to develop writing skills. More importantly though is the opportunity for kids to become involved with their family or community in a positive way. The process of writing about it will help in cognitive and spatial ability.
The second Valentine's Day lesson plan is meant for junior high school students and is a great Health class lesson. Give each student a precut paper heart and plenty of markers, glitter and whatever else you can find to use as decorations. Instruct the kids to draw a picture of themselves in the middle of the heart. Then turn the heart over and write as many things as they can name that they love about themselves. Tell them when they are done that to put the pens away.
Tell them to put one decoration on the front of the heart for each positive thing that they wrote. When the students complain after finishing that they want more decorations, tell them to write down changes that they can make to become happier with themselves. Reward the kids by allowing them to make a decoration for each change that they can make. These hearts are private and can be stored in a drawer or book. Challenge the kids to finish the heart at home by adding another decoration for each change worked on and made.
The third Valentine's Day lesson plan idea, a Heart Collage, is ideal for kids of all ages. Each kid will need a computer with internet access and a working printer. Other supplies is glue, markers, and a large paper heart. The idea is that the heart should be filled with images of things loved. A sub theme is important, such as the world's animals, places to go, entertainers and celebrities, plants and cars. The kid's age will be a major factor in the sub theme chosen and will also affect how precise the project is finished.
Supervise and help younger children using the computer. Let each child make a printed collection. Each picture will then have to be cut out and glued lightly to the paper heart. Each heart can have a hangar added by gluing a piece of ribbon or yarn in a loop on the top of the back.
So whether you are home schooling children or working in a school environment, I hope you enjoy and use these three Valentine's Day lesson plan ideas. I'm sure the kids will.
