Three Main Coverage Options Available for Pet Insurance Policies

Pet health insurance can help you and your family out of a financial jam should something unexpected happen to the beloved family pet. This coverage is great for people who are much better off paying a monthly or periodic premium than paying a large amount of money at one time after the dreaded event occurs. With pet health insurance there are a few different things that can be covered under a policy, here are the top three types of policy coverage for pets.

1. Illnesses: This coverage will help you pay for common ailments so that your pet doesn't have to be unhappy or unhealthy for a long period of time. The question to ask your pet insurance company is if they cover long-term ailments like cancer or diabetes. If these types of acts are insurable you need to find out up to what limit can and will be covered.

2. Accidents: A dog severely hurting itself is the most common type of accident caused under pet health insurance. Additional items that may be covered after your questioning include the removal of swallowed objects and treatment of hernias. These conditions are not as likely to be covered, but you can find them if you look into the right cause.

3. Routine Care: Preventative measures like annual exams, vaccinations, teeth cleaning, and diagnostics such as blood panels and urine testing may or may not be covered. Most pet insurance companies offer expanded packages where these routine care items are covered and save you money. The more routine items you can get covered the better off you will be when something actually happens to your pet.

The most important thing to remember about the coverage that is afforded to you in your policy is that it is done so with your signature. If you try to dispute after the fact that you wanted a service that was not covered and you don't have any signatures for the policy you will be in trouble. This coverage may or may not be afforded to you but at least you were prepared.

Just because something is a covered procedure doesn't mean that it will be covered completely, it just means you will likely get some assistance to pay for it. The insurance company you choose will decide if they are going to hide coverage in the back room or if they will post a benefits schedule to help everyone.
