Fashion Fallacy #1: We're oblivious to changing style
Skinny ties, wide ties, t-shirts under suit jackets, 3 piece suits, bell bottoms, parachute pants: we notice all of these things. It's not that we're not fashion forward, we're just afraid to try. Henry David Thoreau once wrote "Every generation laughs at the old fashions, but follows religiously the new." It's the laughter that's the problem for us. Who doesn't remember Members Only jackets and Flock of Seagulls hair? Some of us we're even guilty of it back in the day. It's embarrassing. We don't want to make the same mistake again. Remember how shocking Regis Philbin's monotone suit tie and shirt looked when he first appeared on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" We all noticed the fashion trend emerging, but most of us waited until everyone was wearing it, and/or a girlfriend pushed us into it before we were brave enough to sport one.
Fashion Fallacy #2: Appearance doesn't matter
We care. We really do. We're not wearing the same shirts from decade to decade because we don't care; we're wearing them because once upon a time, we looked good in them. They hid our belly fat, and made us look fit, and now we're afraid nothing else out there will do the job. Ladies aren't the only ones that have trouble finding that perfect pair of jeans, they just have the luxury of talking to each other about it, but in general w wouldn't dare. It's not easy to find a pair of pants that make our butts look good, and believe me - we hear that the fairer sex notices that sort of thing. So once we find something that works, we stick with it, even if only the last threads are holding the clothes together.
Fashion Fallacy #3 Shopping gives us hives
This is one of the major myths about men. But it's not shopping that's the problem; it's the style of shopping that's different with men. We plow into a store and are out in the blink of an eye, not because we hate shopping, but because we value efficiency. We hate wasting time in a store when we could be shooting hoops or watching football. So we head into the store and assess the situation: do they have what we're looking for? No? Then leave. Yes? Then buy it and leave. This transaction should all take 10 minutes or less. Long lines are not conducive to male shopping habits.
