Three Movie Trilogies that Never Should Have Been

The Worst Movie Trilogies Around

Kelly Herdrich
Undoubtedly, there have been some amazing movie trilogies. From the original Star Wars trilogy, the Indiana Jones trilogy, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, to Shrek and X-Men. Sadly, there are also many movie trilogies that should have stayed as single movies and left the rest up to the imagination. Here are three of the, quite possibly, worst movie trilogies that moviegoers might encounter.

Pirates of the Caribbean
The first Pirates of the Caribbean movie was incredible, even garnering a best actor nomination for Johnny Depp. The cast, the acting, the script, and the plot were complete, entertaining, and fun. Producers and writers should have stopped there. The following two movies were too convoluted to make watching them enjoyable. The scripts were long winded and confusing, and even attentive viewers were easily lost. By making Pirates of the Caribbean into a trilogy, the excellent first movie is overwhelmed by the two disasters that followed. Pirates of the Caribbean is clearly one of the worst trilogies made.

American Pie
Though incredibly inappropriate, the first American Pie movie was funny and unique. With the second two movies, writers tried, and failed, to recreate the off-color humor that made the first movie such a success. Filled with the same jokes, sometimes bordering on being too over the top, the second and third movies in the trilogy were a complete waste of money and time. While younger viewers might have laughed at the jokes, older viewers left the theaters disgusted and a little embarrassed that they'd even bothered. American Pie is another movie trilogy that should have stayed a single film.

Ocean's Eleven
Not only was Ocean's Eleven a re-make, and some say not even a good one, but producers, writers and actors decided to come back for more with Ocean's Twelve and Ocean's Thirteen. These movies, rounding out the trilogy, were atrocious to watch. Again, trying to recreate the magic and excitement of the first movie proved impossible, and these subsequent films just missed the mark. The Ocean's Eleven trilogy is yet another trilogy that missed the mark.

These three movie trilogies represent, in my opinion, the worst of the movie trilogies made today. However, there were a plethora of close runners up. Karate Kid, Superman, and Spiderman are also movie trilogies that never should have been made. Producers, writers and actors are losing sight of how difficult it really is to make a good movie trilogy. If the first film is excellent and can stand alone, please don't ruin it by making it into a trilogy!

The author of this article would love to hear from you--is there a movie trilogy that you think should have topped this list of movie trilogies that never should have been? Why? Do you disagree with one of my selections? Tell me about it!

  • Pirates of the Caribbean was a great movie, but it's sequels were atrocious!
  • American Pie's sequels did nothing but take off color jokes too far.
  • Ocean's Twelve and Thirteen tried to recreate the magic of the first film, but fell flat.

Agreed! There are so many bad choices for trilogies out there. :)

    Hmm... I'm thinking about Shrek.

Unfortunately, Hollywood does have a nasty habit of taking a good idea and beating it to death. Some things should be left alone. Great article.

I have not seen all of the pirates movies, oceans or pie movies but I'll take your word for the pie movies for sure.

I agree about the Matrix. I LOVED the first, but the next 2 were just too much. I must disagree with your Pirates picks though. I didn't like the second, but I thought the third was brilliant. I then re-watched the second and found more to like about it. I just thought the third really pulled everything together. This isn't a trilogy (thank God) but the second Tombraider was a disaster.

Unless you are a die-hard sci-fi fan, I would add The Matrix trilogy to the list. The first one was so great, my hubby and I watched it three nights in a row. After that, it just got exhausting to watch the actors try to maintain their intensity as the plot moved further and further away from anything within the realm of remotely possible.

Interesting, my movie requirements range in the "need to mildly entertain me" range. I guess I am no critic.

I think even Brad Pitt recently said that the "Ocean's" movies had exhausted just about every possibility out there and that no more movies would be made. Translation: Brad can't believe he let George and Matt con him into making the last two movies. Nicely written!

Great article! I actually didn't like any of the Pirates movies (at least not for kids). I thought there was too much violence and too little plot. I also agree that your other two selections were right on. An example of a good trilogy is the Lord of the Rings. Now that was worth watching three.

Agreed, agreed, and, agreed. All of those movies gave me a headache. I think I fell asleep during Oceans Eleven. Great list.
