Day Trip Options from the Historic City on the Dalmatian Coast

Many eastern Mediterranean cruises now include a stop in Dubrovnik, Croatia, known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic." Besides visiting the old city of Dubrovnik, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, there are a number of excellent sightseeing opportunities nearby. Here are three amazing day trip options when visiting this beautiful spot on the Dalmatian Coast.

Popular Island of Lokrum

Less than 10 minutes away by ferry, this island is a popular excursion destination for both locals and tourists. Lokrum has a botanical garden, a lake called the Dead Sea, and a beautiful fortress that looks to Dubrovnik. Some people vacationing in Dubrovnik also enjoy Lokrum for its world famous nudist beach. Since it is such a short ferry ride away from Dubrovnik, many tourists combine a day of exploring Lokrum with sightseeing in Old Dubrovnik.

Largest Defensive Walls in Europe - Ston and Mali Ston

Ston and Mali Ston are located less than an hour from the cruise ship port and have some interesting historical sights worth checking out.

Ston has historical beginnings as a center for salt mining, which continues today. Visitors can walk around the old salt mines right across the street from the village center. Mali Ston is located just across the street from Ston, which is home to numerous mussel and oyster farms. Some of the best oysters and mussels found throughout Europe are imported from Croatia.

Besides the seafood and salt mines, one of the top reasons to visit Ston and Mali Ston is to see the largest fortified wall in Europe, also one of the largest defensive walls in the world. The fortress walls connect Ston and Mali Ston and are quite impressive in person.

Trsteno - Arboretum and Renaissance Park

Very close to Ston and Mali Ston is Trsteno, which is home to a world famous arboretum and Renaissance park. Originally Trsteno was home to many sea captains and seamen, but is is to a world famous Arboretum and Renaissance park dating back to the 15th century. Filled with beautiful flowers and plants, the historic area provides breathtaking views of the Adriatic and neighboring islands.

If you want to explore more of the countryside rather than one of these short day trips, consider looking into specialty tours that allow you to tour private farms and taste local specialties like olives and wine.
