Three Natural Cures for Heartburn

Heartburn, GERD, acid reflux. Three unwelcome after-dinner guests that so many of us are plagued with. Escort these unwelcome guests off the premises and prevent their return with these three natural cures for heartburn.

Orange Peel Extract Cures Heartburn

A little bit of orange peel extract taken daily can extinguish the flame of heartburn instantly, reduce heartburn frequency within 48 and totally eliminate heartburn and it's symptoms in two weeks for many people.

Orange peel contains D-limonene, a natural compound which speeds tissue healing, helps keep food moving through the digestive system and prevents stomach acids from flowing back up into the esophagus. Look for orange peel extract in health food stores and pharmacies, and follow the package directions for dosing.

Apple Cider Vinegar Speeds Digestion

Mix one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar into an 8 ounce glass of water and drink before each meal to speed up the digestion process. Apple cider vinegar contains natural acids which help food digest and move into the small intestine before it can back up into the esophagus and cause heartburn. A tablespoon of apple cider vinegar can be taken without water if desired, but the 8 ounces of water also aid in digestion and help you feel fuller quicker during a meal.

Eat More Fruit to Prevent Heartburn

Fruit is rich in pectin, a type of soluble fiber. When fruit is eaten, the pectin creates an acid neutralizing barrier of foam near the top of the stomach. After a meal, when stomach acid attempts to make it's way back up into the esophagus and cause heartburn, the pectin foam neutralizes the acid and stops the harsh stomach fluid from splashing onto the delicate tissue of the esophagus.

If Heartburn Occurs at Night

If heartburn is at it's worst when you lie down at night, certain triggers are usually to blame. Specific food and beverages cause the valve that's located between the stomach and esophagus to relax and allow stomach acid to slosh up into the esophagus, causing heartburn when you lie down. Avoid these trigger food and beverages after 7pm to prevent nighttime heartburn; Fried, fatty or spicy foods. Tomato products. Chocolate or mint. Soda or alcoholic beverages.
