Three Places to Buy Affordable Food in Bakersfield, California

Shannon Wilson
If you're on a low budget, then you know how important it is to make every single dollar stretch in your food budget. As the head of a family of six, I know all to well how important it is to make our money go far in the food department. I scour the sale papers each week and write a list of what items to buy where to get more bang for my buck. But in between those times, I shop at places I know how affordable food. This article will detail the top three stores in in Bakersfield, California that I go to.

#1: 99 Cent Store

The 99 Cent Store is one of my favorite places to go to for cheap food. Cheap food does not equal bad food as they get several name brand items that are no longer being sold or are close to being expired. I've found name brand boxes of cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit and veggies, etc all for just .99 cents each. To make the most of when they offer, ask your 99 Cent Store that is by you when they get food delivery's, going by that you should plan on going the days they get new food in so you can take advantage of those great deals.

Bakersfield has several 99 Cent Stores. One is located at 1121 Olive Drive Bakersfield , CA. 93308. For a list of locations, go to their website here and enter your zip code. They are open from 8 AM to 9 PM Sunday through Saturday.

#2: Winco

Winco is a large grocery store that more often then not has some good prices. Now they don't have good prices on everything but compared to a store like Albertson's or Vons, their prices are much more affordable generally. So I go here to pick up food because I can get more food at Winco then I can at some of the other grocery stores. I can get good deals on fresh produce, canned foods and even meat. Look for the meat that has been marked down. It is still good and if you buy it, you can freeze it so it won't spoil and you'll still have meat for the month.

Winco is located at 4200 Coffee Rd. Bakersfield , CA 93308 and their phone number is (661) 213-3726. They are open 24 hours, seven days a week.

#3: Big Lots

Big Lots is well known for having discounted items but did you know that they also have a food section? One corner of their store is completely dedicated to food. Here you will find discounted food that has either been discontinued or a store got too much of it and sold it to Big Lots. I usually get canned items here, crackers and cereal. Honesty, you never know what you'll find food wise at Big Lots. I go every once in a while to see what bargains they have.

Big Lots is located at 1211 Olive Drive Bakersfield , CA 93308 . Bakersfield has two other Big Lots. For a list of locations, visit this link. They are open 9 AM to 9 PM every day.
